5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing borderline about the quality of this book!
Drs. Elliott and Smith have taken a complex, heart-rending disorder and explained it in simple language. This insightful treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder speaks to a broad audience. Sufferers of this disorder, the people who love and work with them, and those who treat them will find understanding, guidance, and hope in this book. As a Clinical Psychologist, I...

2.0 out of 5 stars far from helpful
I found this book far from helpful. a very general overviw of BPD, with very little discussion of DBT, the most researched and successful treatment for BPD. The authors appear to have no understanding of the concept of dialectics and its impact on the successful treatment of BPD.
The ommision of dialectics leads to my biggest criticism of the book. The stories...

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for "Dummies"!, January 29, 2011

This review is from: Borderline Personality Disorder For Dummies (Paperback)
As a licensed psychotherapist, I am always looking for innovative ways to help those of my clients with this diagnosis learn to control their symptoms, particularly the frequent emotional upheavals. Borderline Personality Disorder for Dummies is like having the "Cliff Notes" for the DSM-IV-TR! It has helped me help my clients to view this disorder within a much more hopeful framework!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book that really helped me, January 20, 2010
This review is from: Borderline Personality Disorder For Dummies (Paperback)
This was a very good book that was well written for people like me to understand. My ex-husband has borderline personality disorder and this book really explained what was going on, why he acted the way he did and what I can do about it in the future. Thanks for writing this book, and if anyone has someone with BPP this is a good book to read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Explained in Understandable English, July 12, 2011
This review is from: Borderline Personality Disorder For Dummies (Paperback)
I am a great fan of the "For Dummies" series because even though the authors are breaking a concept into plain English, they do so without being condescending or relying too much on the jargon of the trade. I know a good deal about Borderline Personality Disorder; however, this book helped to clarify some of the symptoms and many of the overlapping portions of the psychiatric scale and diagnosis.

I wrote a novel in which two of the lead characters have Borderline Personality Disorder, but I am continuing to learn about BPS.

Two other excellent titles for lay readers are "Stop Walking on Eggshells" and "I Hate You, Don't Leave Me."

"BPS for Dummies" is a useful tool for anyone in contact with a Borderline or dealing with the diagnosis herself.

This review is from: Borderline Personality Disorder For Dummies (Paperback)
This book is well written and offers excellent insights and advice to anyone suffering from BPD, as well as those who love someone with the disorder. Except for its easy-to-read style, there is nothing "dummy-ish" about this book. Highly recommended.

The stories about relationships, and the chapter written for partners, illustrate exteme negative behavior of those with BPD while ignoring the possibily that the other party in the relationship may also be contributing to the relationships. The person with BPD is solely at fault, soley blamed- a perfect example of the environment that contributes to the devopemant of BPD. The reader with BPD can comes to the conclusion that he or she is defective. In short, I do not recomend this book.
