5.0 out of 5 stars Borders, Bindings & Edges: The Art of Finishing Your Quilt, January 25, 2006
This review is from: Borders, Bindings & Edges: The Art of Finishing Your Quilt (Paperback)
This is a wonderful reference book for quilters of all skill levels who want to turn out beautiful, heirloom quality quilts. Although the book is geared to the construction of small rather than bed-size quilts, the principles covered by Ms. Collins are applicable to all quilts regardless of size. The book is filled with photographs and illustrations, yet it is more of a "how-to manual" than an inspiration book. The writing is clear, concise and to-the-point. The quilt photos used are all designed to illustrate one or more of the techniques or principles taught. The book is also laid out so that one can find information on specific topics quickly and easily. It even includes an index. This book is not set up to be a project book (one that includes projects designed to help teach the techniques covered). However, I think it would be very useful to make several small quilts that utilize Ms. Collins techniques before applying them to a larger quilt or a more important project.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality and artistry all in one, January 18, 2007

This is a fabulous book for someone interested in improving the quality of their patchwork and creating the visual artistry we admire in award winning quilts. It is not for the "do-it-quicker" crowd. The skills and techniques take practice and time - but precision and high quality will be your reward.

I also strongly recommend Ms. Collins' book "Mastering Precision Piecing" - which complements the information in this book. Both books are "keepers" and welcome additions to my library.

Note: this is not a book of "projects," but a book about how to design and create beautiful, balanced borders and bindings for YOUR quilt.

4.0 out of 5 stars Are planning the borders on your quilt left till the last minute?, February 25, 2010

This review is from: Borders, Bindings & Edges: The Art of Finishing Your Quilt (Paperback)
In this book Sally Collins has shown how important the borders are in the overall design of your quilt.
To leave them until the very last is not wise as the borders can be very complementary to a quilt design.
I'm glad I have this book to refer to when I am deciding a border.
Sally shows that it is not necessary to make a complicated border to finish off the quilt top.
However it is a good idea to incorporate the border in the overall design right at the beginning rather than just adding strips to make the quilt top 'bigger.'
The book also has many ideas to help you decide edge finishes.
