5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Psychedelia, July 14, 2006
By
This review is from: Boris At Last - Feedbacker (Audio CD)
This is Boris' most psychedelic release. It is also one of their magnum opus albums. By now, you may or may not know that Boris is a chameleon of rock and metal. And I mean that in the most honorable way. The way Led Zeppelin could play blissed out blues and then rock a punk riff, and then melt minds with rock straight from the factory floor yet still remain Led Zep, so is Boris an ever changing, musically adept trio, that scorches through whatever they wish to at the time and leaves their mark on it. Like Zorro, they are the swashbuckling heroes of rock and roll, but they wield guitars and drums instead of a skinny little sword.

So by calling Feedbacker one of their magnum opus albums, I mean to bring light to the fact that they have a few albums that play out as one long hour long song. They have albums that are more track by track oriented, such as their latest album Pink, but albums like Absolutego, Flood, Amplifier Worship, and this album Feedbacker, are musical mission statements...

I can spare youthe details if every album and tell you that A) they are all different from each other, and B) you should look them up and read the reviews that people wrote, and finally C) they are all amazing in their own way.

Feedbacker though is easily the most psychedelic of these albums. It is a 5 part ride through some of the most overwhelming feedback swells and also some of the most drugged out space rock on this, the darkest side of the moon. Yes the Floyd reference is there for a reason. This is a wonderful complete album bookended with feedback and filled with soaring gorgeous songs with a weight that belies this worlds own gravity. Melodies are buried deep in the fabric of sound that Boris has created and it takes some patience and a good sound system (or headphones) to appreciate how deep and moving this piece can be. In terms of tone, the guitars sound old, and the heaviness never reaches the peaks of Amplifier Worship or Absolutego, but it is still heavy. Heavy in terms of depth and height. They plumb the lowest of all bass depths as they always do and juxtapose the rumble with screeching feedback, all amps running far into the red threatening total destruction of your ears. Walls of sound wrap suffocatingly around you until you feel you cant breath until you are released into a bubbling ether of acid hazed psychedlic guitar solos and warbly fuzzy drones.

The album is extremely ambitious and it fulfills its purpose laid out in the title "Feedbacker". It has a third eye opening quality to it that would make Tool jealous and Sunn 0))) proud. If you dig this, then you must go and check out their other stuff, because as well as their magnum opuses, they have a few albums based more on a rock and roll, sabbath/ motorhead style, as well as some incredibly dense sound experiments and a slew of collaborations and vinyl only releases that will keep you interested for years....enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind-melting, August 13, 2007

This review is from: Boris At Last - Feedbacker (Audio CD)
This is quite possibly my favorite Boris album. Unlike some of their other one-song albums (Flood, Absolutego), this one manages to hold my attention for its entire duration. It's a 43 minute slow burn that's a cohesive whole. Highly, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet ANOTHER 5 Star Review!, January 1, 2011
The beautifully talented Japanese Trio Boris has created a five part MASTERPIECE here! Without a doubt one of the most masterful Psychedelic mind melts ever to be recorded, this IS Feedbacker. And just as the name of the record suggests you get FEEDBACK....lots of feedback.

The swells and crashes of feedback are worth the admission alone but MY favorite "movement" is PartII. Beautiful, dreamy music that does ultimately end in a carsh is what I picture in my head as my "Life Theme" music.

ALSO do NOT miss a chance to see Boris live. They are not to be missed! If you dig Boris at all be sure to search out Acid Mother's Temple, Kinski and Bardo Pond just to name a few equally talented Psychedelic experiences!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Boris' most complete albums, April 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Boris At Last - Feedbacker (Audio CD)
"Feedbacker" is the most complete, and well-executed record out of the 5 Boris albums I've heard. The five include "Amplifier Worship", "Akuma no Uta", "Pink", "Smile" and of course Feedbacker. Well, I must say this record only reinforced what I thought Boris was truly capable of.

Just as a forewarning, this album does take patience to fully digest, as it's essentially ONE, 43 minute long song. It's definitely not for people who are looking for more song-oriented material, who may skip certain songs if they dislike them on first or second play-through. Feedbacker must be heard in it's entirety, otherwise the album won't make any sense and you'll belittle the experience you get when the album's closer tunes you out. It is split into 5 parts, although the five parts are strongly woven together.

I award this album 5 stars because of where the album takes you on its 43 minute quest. It opens silently, builds you up for a payoff throughout most of Part I, yet it teases you and never really explodes. Part II is so relaxing for the first half that you can easily daydream to it, go somewhere peaceful in your head. The other half of Part II is where Takeshi's vocals come in finally, and the guitars drown you out into almost a dreamlike place. The loud feedback ending Part II leads you into Part III seamlessly, and sends you off really quick for a true beating . This is where Feedbacker begins to take a more rock out-oriented mold. Part III begins with noise and distortion, and takes you on a quest to a truly amazing place with Takeshi on full vocals blaring his guitar, and Wata providing some truly chaotic wailing with her feedback. Atsuo only makes it better with his great, frantic drumming and vocals to complement the action. Part III bleeds into the records' extremely noisy, brutal climax of Part IV. No vocals here, no drumming, just a screeching assault on your ears with the most potent feedback and electronic buzzing you could possibly take. It remains entirely noise and destruction for 9 minutes, and dies out slowly towards the end to Part V. Serving as the aftermath, Part V finally gives you a breather, yet it carries the now quieter screech of IV in the background with Part II's daydream sounds tuning you out until Feedbacker closes.

The album/song is very addictive to listen to if you've got the time and patience. It stands up very well to repeated listens, and for an album that's 6 years old, it never really shows it's age. My favorite Boris album, and very highly recommended. Track this record down, experience it with open ears and an open mind, you will be glad you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars it's unanimous, December 25, 2008

This review is from: Boris At Last - Feedbacker (Audio CD)
With its lower case lettering, this is clearly a "mellow" Boris album, and it's one long five part tune, full of feedback and weird sounds. The first part is guitar cords, part two is slow drumming a la Angelo Badalamenti atmospherics. It launches and soars like progressive metal and spooky blues, and singing finally at the end of part two, about 20 minutes into the song, when it finally gets really massively heavy. Things get really hairy in part three, where the band is tight as hell. Part four is where it gets really wonky and crazy - and where my ears start to hurt. Part five just sort of tones out.

No wonder each of the previous reviewers gave this five stars - this album is one of Wata, Atsuo and Takeshi's best releases (this is certainly also the case for lower-case boris' as well). "Feedbacker" is reproduced in a somewhat shorter version on the live-with-Merzbow "Rock Dream," it's one of that double disc's standout tracks as well.

Monolithic, HEAVY as !@#$% drones, which shamble about their dwarfed listeners, reinforced with the most mellifluous mind-bending psych.
