Book Description

February 6, 2013 9953579156 978-9953579153
The photography in this boxed coffee table book captures, in stunning detail, performances of five productions of Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg, one of the foremost touring dance companies in the world today. Photographer Souheil Michael Khoury traveled with the company in 2011 and 2012, capturing the world premiere of Rodin in St Petersburg, as well as Anna Karenina in Amsterdam, Don Quixote in California, Onegin in London and Red Giselle in Italy. Each of his pictures delivers, in a visceral yet exquisitely refined form, the immediate punch of Boris Eifman's vision, the extreme grace of his dancers as well as the tormented expression of the turmoil in their characters' souls.
The essay by Tatiana Boborykina, professor of philology at St. Petersburg State University, relates Boris Eifman's personal story, his struggle during the Soviet era to freely express his artistic sensibility and vision, as well as his subsequent recognition and triumph in his country and on the world stage. It also sheds light on the ballets themselves, their literary history, their cultural relevance and their symbolism.

About the Author

As a young news photographer in his native Lebanon, Souheil Michael Khoury had the opportunity to capture the performances of Alvin Ailey and Maurice Bejart. Today, more than 30 years later, after receiving a Fulbright scholarship and a Master of Fine Arts at New York University, he still holds the same intense passion for dance photography. He regularly shoots some of the world's most prestigious dance companies, including San Francisco Ballet, Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Ballets de Monte Carlo, American Ballet Theater and Alvin Ailey Dance Theater.

I didn't think it was possible to capture in still photos the dynamic and utterly gorgeous visual impact of a Boris Eifman dance production, but here are the scenes that caught the mental images I took with me when I left my first visit to a Boris Eifman performance. I have rarely seen that kind of palpable emotion and theatrical quality in a dance production. The pages of this wonderful book hold beautiful images that validate my memory. Michael Khoury is a true artist with the rare ability to capture fleeting beauty in the kinds of scenes that will always be locked in your memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful! March 10, 2013
This is a unique and original book, which melds together two art forms: dance and photography.
Five of Boris Eifman's ballets are represented. Boris Eifman is, in my opinion, one of the most original and expressive choreographers around.
The stunning images in this book truly capture the intensity of live performances like never before. Everything is exquisite: the movement, the composition, the lighting, and most of all, the emotion.
The production quality is exceptional: rich, heavy paper, deep colors and deep blacks, impeccable binding and a luxurious slipbox. This is a book to keep and cherish, or to give to a loved one.
