Book Description

0899505805 978-0899505800 April 1991
The result of nearly 15 years of research, this comprehensive analysis of Boris Karloff’s life and career, incorporates criticism, in-depth production information, discussion of major cinematic themes and characters, and a look at the historical periods and events depicted in the films. Extensive biographical and career information is dovetailed with a discussion of the classic Hollywood era in order to examine Karloff’s overall contribution to American cinema.

Each of Karloff’s horror films is examined at length, as well as his contributions to other media. Over 100 posters, portraits, film scenes and candid photos illustrate the text, and numerous contemporaries (Evelyn Karloff, Laurence Olivier, Henry Brandon, Ian Wolfe, Zita Johann, others) are quoted throughout.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Already the subject of several fan-oriented biographies and "films-of" accounts (e.g., Richard Bojarsky's The Films of Boris Karloff , LJ 10/1/74), beloved Hollywood character actor Karloff is ill-served by this quasi-scholarly monograph. Horror buff Nollen concentrates on Karloff's "terror" films (less than a third of the actor's movie work), with other film, stage, and broadcast appearances mentioned only in passing or relegated to the extensive bibliographies in the back matter. Nollen has little to say about Karloff the man or his craft as an actor. Much of the "critical" portion of this book involves Nollen's opinions about Hollywood filmmaking and the horror genre, interspersed with quotes from other critics. The endless movie plot descriptions and trivial digressions make for dull reading. The foreword, by Ray Bradbury, is reprinted from Forrest J. Ackerman's out-of-print Frankenscience Monster (Ace Bks., 1969).

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough look at Karloff's best work!, August 5, 2004
This review is from: Boris Karloff: A Critical Account of His Screen, Stage, Radio, Television, and Recording Work (Hardcover)
This is the first of Nollen's books that I read--a comprehensive discussion of the best work of the great Boris Karloff, including all his major "terror films." Written over two decades, with the participation of Karloff's widow and many colleagues, this is the best scholarly critique of Karloff's films, plus an excellent general biography. For THE BEST biography of Karloff, see Nollen's second Karloff book, BORIS KARLOFF: A GENTLEMAN'S LIFE, soon to be reprinted by Luminary Press. Karloff and classic film films, get both Nollen books--THIS ONE is the best one on the films, and GENTLEMAN'S LIFE is the best on the life + great stuff on the films. This book is massive, has many great and rare photos from the author's collection, and is beautifully bound. McFarland books are a bit expensive, but this one is worth every penny.
