one of the recurring themes in my reviews is wonderful movies (The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Ghosbusters II, The Shadow, The Lone Ranger) which are denied the respect they deserve. add to that list those charming turn-of-the-century adapatations Dudley Do-Right and The Adventures Of Rocky & Bullwinkle. both tanked thanks to the efforts of The League Of Sourpuss Critcs Against Fun In Movies (LOSCAFIM), but both are just what movies based on that particular source material should be. you mark my words: Jay Ward would be honored by both homages to his masterpiece. both more than recapture the flavor of that Citizen Kane of cartoons from whence they sprang.
what about Boris & Natasha, you ask? it's harder to say, since the formula is a little off. but then, is it even possible to change established villains into heroes without shifting the flavor a little? (YOU try it sometime.) i hereby surmise that Ward would have a few reservations on that basis, but ultimately be just as tickled.
the essense of the story is "culture shock," as Boris and Natasha attempt to decipher how life works in this America they've been assigned to infiltrate. in particular Natasha, under the tuteledge of a neighbor played by the always solid Andrea Martin, tries to wrap her hand around the "capitalistic" ideal than a relationship between an man and a woman should be a partnership.
Dave Thomas is an ample Boris...but then what would you expect from Doug McKenzie, eh? his accent slips a little here and there, but on the whole he no less the essence of the character than Jason Alexander would be a decade or so later.
more of a surprise is Sally Kellerman.

This movie is one of my childhood favorites. The Boris and Natasha characters from Rocky and Bullwinkle shine here in live action the narrator, if you're familiar with Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons, does not disappoint, either.

I think this is a fun, dumb movie, which it should be since it mirrors the cartoon characters. I enjoy watching it. Who doesn't love Boris and Natasha?
