Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10-Yeltsin is introduced as a hero whose "sheer raw courage" foiled the hard-line Communists' August 1991 coup attempt. Subsequent chapters recount the Russian president's entire life. Although Schecter stresses the man's intrepid spirit and dedication to democratic ideals, she also depicts less laudable traits, notably his brash behavior and his propensity to drink heavily. Like others in the series, this biography offers a straightforward text; wide margins with occasional sidebars; and numerous, average-quality black-and-white photographs. However, it lacks maps, a distinct disadvantage for students grappling with the disintegration of the former Soviet Union. While Eleanor Ayer's Boris Yeltsin (Dillon, 1992) provides an excellent map of Russia and the surrounding republics, that title is geared to a younger audience. This volume is an appropriate overview for YAs who don't want to delve too deeply into the subject.
