Great Book of Poetry, September 29, 2011
This review is from: Born in the Cavity of Sunsets (Paperback)
Quite a joy to read and full of amazing stories. Well crafted poems, images that pop off the page and linger with you for days. Set in the central valley of califis, Fresno, the dirt and dust and lives of the people there rise with dignity. Be it an elegy to his father, or an uncle just out of prison, or a Postcard to Ginsberg, the poems are worth reading, and reading again... Even if you have to pay shipping, this is worth the price of admission!
(from "Poem for My Tio One Week after His Release")
Tonight there are no mad-dog stares,
only hard embraces from friends,
relatives you've done time with.
Tonight the moon is still an accusing lamp
over Fresno Street, your cousin is the man
at the corner bumming dollars for beer,
and your mother is reciting the rosary
in an empty room,
meditating on beads of smoke.
