4.0 out of 5 stars Great Second Release, July 7, 2009
This review is from: Born On Flag Day (MP3 Download)
I was introduced to Deer Tick through a friend from Providence (the bands hometown)a little over a year ago when they were doing even smaller venues than now, mainly around Boston. They've since been getting great exposure, and deservedly so.

Born on Flag Day is a great listen. Deer Tick doesn't come at you with any revolutionary songs, just great, great music with outstanding, insightful, and creative lyrics. I don't think they are trying to be anything they aren't. They're just writing great songs.

This CD, much like the first, is quite strong overall with a number of amazing, stand-out tracks. For me, those were Easy, Houston-TX, and Smith Hill. I literally can't stop listening to them. There are a number of other 'better than good' songs on here as well, like Song About A Man, Friday the 13th, Little White Lies, The Ghost. We even get a hidden song after Stung (keep listening!). Considering all the songs I just named, that's most of the CD. That's very rare nowadays since most albums have 2 'release' songs and the rest is filler. You won't find that here, nor on their first album, War Elephant.

In what seems to be an era of cookie cutter, radio crap, Deer Tick brings a refreshing sound and some plain old wicked-good tunes. John McCauley has a very unique voice that totally works for his music. Give em a try, you won't regret it. Great album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Follow Up, June 30, 2009

Deer Tick has scored on their 2nd CD. War Elephant was the first and recorded when Providences' own John Joseph McCauley III was 21. On the new CD, "Born on Flag Day", Deertick has matured fully. Some people might not be able to get used to the unique voice, however, everybody will love the words and music. Very catchy.

I just caught this americana/folk/alt/country band at the 50th Newport (RI) Folk Festival last week (where they made a few more thousand new fans of all ages). John McCauley & company were the hit of the festival and have shown why they have constant sellouts on their new album. John is an accomplished songwriter & performer, well beyond his years (like Justin Townes Earle) and has knocked out several catchy tunes (my faves are Ghost, Easy, Little White Lies). I guarantee you'll be tapping your foot through all the songs and will be replaying this CD over & over (I'm at around 20 times since I bought it last week). Please catch these guys if they come your way, it will be well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deer Tick Such a Unique Magic Act, December 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Born On Flag Day (MP3 Download)
Bought this long after being introduced to Deer Tick's "Black Dirt Sessions." I originally mixed this review up with one for the new one "Divine Providence." While each of these albums is uniquely Deer Tick, each sounds like it's own project.

Leader John McCauley serves up a batch of folky, almost Dylan-like truly American music. It's getting hard to find listenable samples on youtube for people like Deer Tick..but if you are curious and want some stuff in your music collection that won't bore you, check out Deer Tick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ticks all the right boxes!, May 7, 2011

Sorry that was a dreadful pun, however it is also true. I was recommended to Deer Tick after reading about how well they went down last year at the SXSW Festival, which has given us the likes of The Felice Brothers. I was interested after two listenings and now find it is one of my most listened to albums. It has a mix of styles that seem to stretch from influences such as Chuck Berry to true Americana ala Son Volt etc.

The vocals do appear to be a bit Dropkick Murphy's but are far more developed than that and the songs are all stand out in thier own ways. I give you 'Song About a Man' which takes the Dylanesque woe is me mix and turns it around with lyrics like 'How can a man feel anything, when all he's ever had is sympathy'. The open track 'Easy' is another example of seeing a worn out topic and turninmg it around. Track 10 is great and only available on the album, I think a reason for this is that it contains a secret track. This is an apparently drunken version of 'Eileen Good Night', with beer cans being opened into the microphones and it is just brilliant. I can also say that having had the privilege to see them live they are worth every penny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Born on Flag Day Review, September 12, 2009

I bought this CD after seeing Deer Tick open for Jenny Lewis. I really liked the CD, it has a more classic Rock 'n Roll with a splash of Country feel to it. If you like Drive by Truckers, then you will enjoy Deer Tick.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good CD!, June 29, 2009
This review is from: Born On Flag Day (Audio CD)
I stumbled across this band after reading a story about Brian Williams of NBC Nightly News. Apparently he's a music junkie and stated this was one of his favorite bands. I must say, they are good, good songs, well written and the lead singer has quite a unique voice. I think this CD will put them on the map!
