4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring selection from a genre with a few original groups., September 19, 2004
This review is from: Born of the Flickering (Audio CD)
First of all, this record isn't the be all, end all of black metal. It has carved a signifigant niche, however, into my vast cd collection. The production is flat and I prefer the stellar production of In defiance of Existence, which is the only other OMC title I own, but the chord changes and swirling guitar work are unique and really stick with me after repeated listenings. Not the first selection I pick up when I am in the mood for black metal, but the dark and foreboding atmosphere of this record makes it perfect for stormy, cold, winter nights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enter a castle built by goblins, torn down by barbarians, May 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Born of the Flickering (Audio CD)
This is Old Man's Child second release. In the release, Old Man's Child and Aldrahn(of Dødheimsgard) compose an album which is like a journey into a dark Norwigien fantasy where goblins and elves battle in war, while dark wizards dictate ominous warriors destinies. Old Man's Child compose dark soundscapes in such songs as "Funeral, Swords, and Souls" or Galders dream of suicide in "The last chapter". I recommend this for an AD&D fan as much as I do a Slayer fan. Line-up: Galder: Vocals, synth, lead, acoustic, and rhythm guitars. Gonde(of Midas Trinthe): bass, backing vocals. Tjodalv(of Dimmu Bigor): drums, Jardar: Guitars., Lord Draug Aldrahn: Vocals, Additional acoustics: Richard Wilkstrand., Choirs by: Torill Snyen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthy black metal; nothing too new, but that's okay, January 16, 1999

I'll be honest: I really like this disc, even though there's really nothing that we haven't heard from Emporer, Satyricon, Enslaved, or other earlier acts. The instruments are well-balanced, which is a nice change from most black metal, but the production is still nice and fuzzy. There are slow bits (there's a whole song that is all acoustic, sort of like those interludes on Dissection's first album) and fast bits (blast beats, the drummer isn't as fast as he could be, but reasonable nonetheless). The composition is good, with nice melodic lines, a good mix of black metal screachs and a few death metal growls. There is a strong keyboard component, but not overwhelming. Overall a very nice listen as long as you're not bored of this style of black metal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily their best work, October 5, 2002

Let's be honest: it didn't take Old Man's Child long to lose their sound and become just another Dimmu Borgir clone. Of course, it stands to reason, being that Grusom (now called Galder) has done extensive with work with either Dimmu Borgir or members thereof. However, this release is nothing like anything else to come out of OMC. And to be honest, I have never heard a CD that sounds quite like it. This is distinctive black metal, with great use of changing melodies and rythms. And, I must add, the classical guitar is a very nice touch. If you want to hear Old Man's Child before they lost their voice, this is definitely the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great prelude to their other CDs, May 8, 1999

A great cd. A little crude and not produced very well. But that's what makes this cd so great. I favor this one over the newer titles. Old Man's Child is the ultimate metal band. There's not another band that comes close to OMC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Demonic Blackened North, an old man's demon child is born., June 29, 2006
This review is from: Born of the Flickering (Audio CD)
Classic, classic, classic. An icily evil album to listen to in a dark, secluded forest. Enough of these worthless disputes whether they and Dimmu Borgir sound too commercial now, or whether Black Metal should sound "raw and muddy and CULT", or "overproductive with lots of keyboard and melody". I made the decision long ago that if it sounds like good metal to you, THEN IT IS GOOD METAL! Such picky people bickering back and forth about what "right and wrong" with Black Metal until it gives you a splitting headache. Lay off already.

I recommend this with Dimmu Borgir's 1996 "Stormblast" and Dissection's "Storm Of The Light's Bane" for those that don't have them. Both are classic masterpieces.

Hail To The Black!

5.0 out of 5 stars melodic black metal at it's finest, August 29, 2005
By
This review is from: Born of the Flickering (Audio CD)
this album is awesome, it's pretty melodic but the production is raw much like early black metal. the guitar work is outstanding the solos are great and like another reviewer mentioned there is a song that is entirely acoustic and it sounds amazing and the rest of the music is really easy to listen to. my only complaint is that the drums are not as fast as many other scandinavian metal bands but they are fitting to the rest of the music.

Yes this is BLACK DEATH METAL!!! a gerne that is dying off!!

These guys mixed up DEATH METAL like bass(GREAT BASS PLYAING BY ''GONDE'') and druming with BLACK METAL guitars and VOKILLS..and then threw in the progressive and REAL gothic type stuff as well!!! BRILLAINT RECIPE!!!

This always makes me feel!! the songs hit you hard!!

And each song is like its own album.. thats how much time they put into each one!! EACH SONG IS A CLASICK!!!

I also warn you not to buy this for the song ''LAST CHAPTER'' as it is the most DEPRESSING thing I have ever heard!! I MEAN THAT!! the solos in this song fit the mood so well.. that it makes your eyes misty!!CHILLING TO THE BONE!!!

LIFE UNDER ZOG IS PAIN..but at least we have this to remind us of ANCIENT TIMES..when the land was pure!!

ONE OF MY TOP TEN ALBUMS!!!!!!!!!YOU MUST OWN IT IF YOU LIKE REAL MUSIC!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Old Man's Child's only true "black metal" cd, January 25, 2005
This review is from: Born of the Flickering (Audio CD)
The other albums by Old Man's Child have the all too common "fat" production, sorta like a heavy metal symphomy of bass, etc; this disc is the only "true" black metal cd that Old Man's Child ever released in the sense that it is etheral, fuzzy, echoey, and sinister. If you wanna know what Old Man's Child used to sound like, get this cd!
