That Magic European Sound, June 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Born for Horn (Audio CD)
This album features a very diverse variety of horn ensemble liturature. All of it is delightful, but highlights are "Lichtspiel" for twelve natural horns (an unusual configuration), and of course, Pichner's "Born for Horn", a charming, somewhat satirical quartet. This album also features one of the best versions of Hindemith's sonata for 4 horns, a very difficult and complex work. Some people I know have been very put off by the distinctively European horn sound on this album, but what did you expect? There is no gooey, flavorless sound that you sometimes hear from some Americans here, there is a definite taste to each note (I am assuming they are all using Alexander horns). This is a very fine album, and should change the way you think about the horn if you are not familiar with it.
