THE LIFE STORY OF A "MESSIANIC JEWISH" PIONEER,
By
This review is from: Born a Jew...Die a Jew: The Story of Martin Chernoff- A Pioneer in Messianic Judaism (Paperback)
Martin Chernoff was president of the Hebrew Christian Alliance of America (HCAA) from 1971 to 1975. This 1996 book was written by Chernoff's wife Yohanna, who stated in the Preface, "To introduce you to Messianic Judaism's American roots, through our work as pioneers in the movement, is my purpose in writing this book."
Here are some quotations from the book: "Money for the salaries of those who served in the organization came mainly from evangelical Christian supporters... This was understandable. There was no such thing as Messianic Judaism or Messianic synagogues. There were not many Jewish believers in Yeshua in the United States, or anywhere else in the world for that matter. So the ministry to the Jewish people, by necessity, was an outgrowth of the Gentile Christian church establishment." (Pg. 78-79) "... in 1960, when Marty and I prayed together for a new infilling, and we both received the gift of tongues." (Pg. 107) "Later that same month, back home in Cincinnati, we incorporated 'Congregation Beth Messiah,' to the best of our knowledge, both then and now, possibly the first modern, indigenous, independent, self-supporting Messianic Jewish congregation in the United States." (Pg. 131) "...a number of our young people grabbed each others' hands and began dancing the hora around in a circle and singing Hava Nagila... Our young people soon began dancing the hora after every service. Gradually, songs other than Hava Nagila were added." (Pg. 150-151)
