4.0 out of 5 stars Danko Who?, December 19, 2002
This review is from: Born a Lion (Audio CD)
Danko Jones, a Canadian Blues/Rock Punk Band from Canada formed in 1996. With the attitude of Jimmie Hendrix And Brian Johnson (AC/DC). Danko Jones sure knows how to rock hard. This really is a great album. Jones has a voice and attitude that is hard to come by in music these days. Its almost like AC/DC as a punk band. Fast paced music, with a classic Rock N Roll guitar sound amd fast catchy drum beats. This album almost has it all, but Every single song has to do with a woman, sex or some kind of love accept for a few songs. Not much lyricaly here. But who really cares? I guess that is what these guys are about, and it works very well. Some music is just made to sing along and groove to :) And Danko Jones pulls it off perfectly. Its not often that you hear Rock N Roll at its purest form. Stand Out tracks include (Caramel City) which has a Kiss feel to it, (Lovercall), (Soul On Ice) which has a definite AC/DC sound, (Get Outta Town) and (Word Is Bond). Its hard to explain this album. In nearly every single song i have this weird feeling that i have heard it before. But once Jones starts singing i get totally lost and lose my concentration. Maybe thats a good thing. Buy this CD, hell, request in on the radio cus these guys need to be heard by more people. Rock Is Still Alive, thanks to Danko Jones.

I've introduced this band to all my friends and every single one of them thank me. I had a friend that kept putting off listening to them until I finally told him that he would soon be crying. ...Crying because he would soon realize that he wasted a few extra days of his life without listening to this band. Put simply, Danko Jones rocks. I got turned on to Danko Jones after hearing "We Sweat Blood". (If you don't own it, buy it. Now.) Predating "Blood", "Born a Lion" rocks just as hard (although it has a couple of the same songs). This band is extremely tight. The lyrics are smart and often hilarious. Fun Stuff. It's now in heavy rotation in my car's disc player. If you like Rock and Roll and you have a soul, you won't regret picking up this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big LOUD ROCK!!!, August 12, 2007

Danko Jones, where to start?

To compare this album to anything, I'd say AC/DC comes to mind immediately, along with some Motorhead influence, a few lead guitar lines in the vein of Black Sabbath or Soundgarden, and a lot more soul than any of those bands ever had. Also less solos, but I'm cool with that, I'll take hearing big awesome riffs over giant wankfests anyday, and its not like they couldn't solo, the lead lines show Danko as a perfectly capable guitarist, so it would seem he CHOOSES to riff around more than solo, and I'm very much down with that.

Simply put, "Born A Lion" by Danko Jones rocks. It rocks HARD! Its a big rifftastic album of pure, unadulterated coq roq.

Lyrically, well, its not PC, and more than a bit mysogenistic, but so were AC/DC, Motorhead, the Rolling Stones, etc. As a man, it doesn't bother me so much, but the women out there might not appreciate lyrics like "If you wanna learn how to play the blues, get yourself a WOMAN!!!"

But I can't imagine anyone taking the lyrics seriously, they rock out in such a big and cartoonish way that its hard to take the "I'm mad at women" messages seriously.

Speaking of the cartoonishness, I've rarely heard a band rock this HARD in my life! The album is chock full of big, sharp, riff carving, and it just gets FASTER and LOUDER as it goes on! I mean, it starts off with slower, more AC/DC-ish methodic chunk riff songs like "Papa" and "Lovercall", then picks up and up till you're in the speedy, pounding stuff like "Get Outta Town" and the super hilarious, bile filled "Love Is Unkind."

One big sweaty, crazy, rockin mess of an album, Danko Jones proudly carries the rock 'n' roll torch high. I'm sure if you like your rock loud, stupid, and crazy awesome (fans of AC/DC and Motorhead should sign up immediately), you'll love "Born A Lion."

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm amazed they're not more famous..., August 3, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Born a Lion (Audio CD)
My first experience with this band was seeing them live, when they toured with The Bronx. Since I had never heard of them before, I was not ready to enjoy them, and I merely wanted The Bronx to start. I held on to this opinion for about three seconds of the first song. These people are good. Incredible, even. Danko is a very charismatric frontman and, when I was lucky enough to meet him, purely by chance, after the concert, he turned out to be just as likeable offstage as when he was on it. Anyway, long story short, this album is brilliant, and you owe it to yourself to both get this album, and see them live.

4.0 out of 5 stars Casey Jones, January 9, 2003

Danko rocks the house on this love sux tribute. I find it hard to believe that its been about half a decade since Casey Jones swept the New York city streets clean of thugs. This CD is the kind of music you wanna hear if you feel that rock has left the radio. Music has changed in a way but Danko keeps rock alive the way it was meant to be. Casey jones you got a new hero to compete with and his name is jones, Danko Jones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Born a Lion is rock music at it's finest, November 5, 2003

Danko Jones is exactly what is missing from the rock genre today. This is straight-up, high-octane, rock and roll, and a little bit of blues for the 21st century.

From the opening track Play the Blues to the last Love Is Unkind, there's plenty there to make a rock lover smile. I do have to admit that my favourite tune in this collection was Lovercall, but aside from that soaring exception, every other track on the album was as awesome and kick-ass as the last.

Although I am not happy about the short running time of the CD (just under 40 minutes) there was nothing else remotely disappointing about it, especially the lack of anger and pessimism that's all too prominent in music today. The raw energy and semi-satirical lyrics were a refreshing change from the self-pity and whining that typically flood the radio waves.

Danko is also one of the best rock shows out there today, and this album comes very close to capturing the intensity of those performances. It's fun to listen to, and leaves you with a good feeling. Anyone out there who misses listening to some good hard rock music, without the blind wrath of rage-rock bands, or the corniness of bands like AC/DC, this is definitely one CD you should pick up. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
