5.0 out of 5 stars Can't put this one down
The story of the engine that could. I bought this book since I am a die-hard Red Sox fan and Pedroia follower, however this is the kind of stuff anyone would like hearing. Everyone said he was too small, too slow, too whatever, Dustin proves that hard work and determination will get you anything you put your heart and soul into. Good book and very motivational however it has quite a few swear words, like the "f" bomb, etc. I bought this for my 10 year old son who is a huge Sox/Pedroia fan and he was the one who brought the cursing to my attention. May be better suited for older kids.

In my opinion I believe Dustin already had the best work ethic in baseball, this just makes me appreciate him that much more. Thanks so much Dustin for sharing your story.

5.0 out of 5 stars His life is accompanied by commentary from coaches, teammates and friends, October 18, 2009
BORN TO PLAY: MY LIFE IN THE GAME comes from baseball great Dustin Pedroia and recounts how he became Rookie of the Year in just two years of major-league play. His life is accompanied by commentary from coaches, teammates and friends and tells of a player who had a difficult journey to fame and success: any library catering to baseball fans will relish this powerful autobiography.

When I saw this book for just a few bucks I was a little apprehensive. But after reading the book I have to say it was a great read. I enjoyed the way the book flowed with the "interviews" from his wife, Tito Francona, Fred Lynn and others interspersed with stories from Pedro himself. The book was inspiring and funny at the same time. I can see this as a book that I re-read over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pedroia is inspiring!, October 24, 2009

Pedroia is, in stature a small man for baseball, but wants more than anything to play ball all his life. He faces some unbelievable odds to get to the major leagues, and makes it. His courage and determination are inspiring!

The chapters are separated with short write ups by those noteworthy people who have watched him work and grow into a major league player. This really adds to the story as it gives another well known expert's impressions of Pedroia along the way.

I consider this a book well worth the read and a place on your bookshelf. It is very upbeat! Dedication and hard work are the positive themes throughout it.

5.0 out of 5 stars very good book, September 18, 2009
I was very excited to read about dustin and see how he was growing up and all the things he went through trying to make it to the big leagues. Just shows if you put a lot of effort into something there will be a reward at the end. I would recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "THE AMERICAN LEAGUE MVP IS A ROLE MODEL FOR ALL BOYS WHO DREAM OF BECOMING A BIG LEAGUER.", August 18, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is the life story of Dustin Pedroia a tough "little" guy who was told by everyone who ever saw him play... that he was just too small. What all these people didn't realize at the time... but found out pretty quickly... was that... the more they doubted him... the more he persevered and overcame. The innumerable taunts... and lack of faith... that constantly rained down upon this undersized ballplayer... who was blessed with a giant's heart... not only made it utterly impossible for Dustin to accept defeat... but it also drove him to only reach for stardom. From the time Dustin was a Little Leaguer... to high school... to Arizona State... thru the Boston Red Sox minor league organization... up to the big leagues with the Red Sox... Pedroia overcame his lack of size with a relentless work ethic... and won over teammates and fans alike... with a gregarious yet respectful personality. Dustin wakes up every morning of his life... gets out of bed... and looks for someone's butt to kick. He is a one-hundred-percent team player... and he not only respects the game of baseball... with all its unwritten "machismo" rules... but he *ABSOLUTELY-LOVES-TO-PLAY-BASEBALL!* he always has and always will.

Dustin comes from a loving hard working family who always supported his dream of playing big league ball. He has overcome debilitating injuries on his personal road to the completion of his lifelong dream of being a big leaguer. What makes this book so enjoyably comfortable to read... is the way in which the co-author Ted Delaney has melded Dustin's words into a story that accomplishes the lofty goal of... coming across as if you're just having a personal chat with Pedroia. Along with day to day statistical accomplishments... Dustin shares the special friendships that he has been blessed with that include Terry Francona... Alex Cora... Mike Lowell... and others. Perhaps the most touching emotional parts of this book are the periodic inserts between chapters with personal views of Dustin from former coaches... players... announcers... fans... and friends. Thus far in Pedroia's short successful career... he has already won a World Championship... he also won the Rookie Of The Year Award in 2007... and he has won the American League Most Valuable Player Award in 2008. From where I'm standing... I would say that there are an awful lot of Major League players looking "up"... at this FIVE-FOOT-SEVEN... OLD-SCHOOL-ROLE-MODEL!
