Editorial Reviews

2011 release, a collection of remixes by some of today's most prominent artists, DJs and producers, including Zedd, Goldfrapp, Foster the People, Wild Beasts, The Weeknd & Ilangelo, Michael Woods, The Horrors, Guena LG, Gregori Klosman, Two Door Cinema Club, Metronomy, Hurts, Twin Shadow, and Sultan & Nedd Shepard. The singles from Lady Gaga's third studio album, including ''Born This Way," "Judas," "The Edge of Glory" and "You and I" have sold a combined total of more than seven million copies in the US alone. The first single from the album, the title track "Born This Way," set a music industry record by becoming the fastest single in history to reach sales of 1,000,000 copies (five days after its February 11th release). Only the 19th single to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (issue date February 26, 2011), the recording was Lady Gaga's third #1 on the chart.

Here is the thing. Before you judge what you think a remix CD should be like, remember this is Gaga. She likes to be different and not normal!

So with that being said, yes, this is definitely not everyones favorite remixes, or what one might expect out of a remix cd, especially coming from pop songs. However, that is not a bad thing. The Born This Way Remix CD is wonderful for what it is not. It is NOT another rebranded pop song, or just another club remix. It is NOT a collection of remixes that everyone will like. However what it IS, is a collection of dark, mysterious remixes that are the opposite of what she probably wanted in her actually Born This Way album. Every song recreates a new meaning to the song itself, and explores different instrumentation and connections. It is the "monster" that wasn't found on the Born This Way album.

As I said, not everyone will like it, and don't have to. There are some weird remixes on here, but overall I think it is unique and different, and dark. My top 3 favs are: Born This Way Zedd Remix, Scheisse Guena Remix, Judas Hurts Remix

Lady Gaga is the rare mainstream artist who certainly needs not to suffer at the hand of the omniscient hack remixers and knob-tweakers who are so willing and encouraged to tamper with the hack that surrounds us these days. Her work could not be any more fully realized, especially through any vision than her own. This Lady's artistry more often than not leaves the tip of her brush as a finished product: polished, appealing, intriguing, provocative. Another reason she's such a refreshing presence in the Top 40 market is how accessible she makes herself to her approving public. In this case, she's a little accessible. Other than that, I can't understand the reasoning behind this remix project--AT ALL. Two contributions stand out, as the integrity of the original song is given priority over the ego of the remixers while the mixers' remain able to exude their own interpretive expression: Yoü And I (Metronomy Remix) & Born This Way (Twin Shadow Remix). In the instances where ego overpowers the song's intergity the results are little more than amaturish, masterbatory studio skills. In a holiday season that's been rather slow with product aimed squarely at the holiday shopper, this release's non-necessity and commercial aspirations are truly apparent.

I don't even know where to begin. Lady GaGa makes some of the best commercial electro pop dance music going. It's sad that CD singles don't really exist anymore, because several of the singles from this album have had promotional releases loaded with dance mixes--and I was HOPING some of those mixes might end up on this collection. Particularly mixes of You & I, since it hit #1 on the billboard dance charts--but most definitely not with any of the dreary mixes included here.

What we get is a predominantly experimental collection of dubs with barely any vocals. There are a few thumping dance beats thrown in that make you try to convince yourself that the particular mix makes the CD worth the purchase, but you soon realize that you'd much rather listen to the actual flawless version from GaGa's album. Honestly, I cant' see EVER listening to this CD again now that I've heard it once.

As a huge fan of GaGa, I expect SO much more than this.

OK, let's get two things straight right now: (1) This is definitely a holiday cash-in and it's pretty obvious that it is. Take it or leave it, but there has been no attempt made to disguise this fact. (2) If you're neither a Lady Gaga fan nor a fan of dance music and/or remixes, you will NOT like this album.

If you do, however, fit one of those two niches, you're in for a real treat. I was pleased to find that these remixes are more unique, experimental, and interesting than the one's on 2010's The Remix, which featured songs from Gaga's first two albums. That album was not bad, but it was less innovation and more club candy. There are lots of strong beats to be found here, and some of these mixes come very close to rivaling the originals (and Born This Way was a fantastic album in its original version). My lone complaint is that there are too many dub mixes. I would have liked to hear more of Gaga's vocals.

This is definitely disappointing as a whole, because there are only 5-6 tracks that weren't released on previous remix/single packages. The new songs are remixes of MTN, Electric Chapel (brilliant remix), Bloody Mary, Scheisse, Black Jesus, and Americano. The other 8 tracks probably are already downloaded and in your library. I was not happy about the selection of the You and I remixes, but that's not really important.

As a whole, this remix album is to keep us interested in this album because Gaga's said she's only half way through the album and she's just now releasing Marry the Night. I've also seen some speculation that the songs featured on here may be her future singles. Also, to be completely void of any true credibility, Gaga did mention that Black Jesus was Justin Timberlake's favorite song off the album, so there's a very slight chance of a collaboration there. Personally, I think that the songs remixed here are a great representation of the album and would make great singles.

As a product, however, more could have been done. She should have at least called it Born This Way The Remix pt 1... Especially, if she's truly only halfway through the album.
