Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2—"If I'd known I was going to be born in public, I'd at least have put on a tank top," begins this infant's diary. A funny twist on the typical new sibling story, this book is written from the baby's point of view as he tries to grow up and be like his big sister. He offers his ideas about the world around him in short monthly entries, until, at the end, he and his sister become best friends as he turns one year old—just what he always wanted! The watercolor and ink illustrations (done on faintly lined pages as in a notebook) faithfully follow the humorous text, depicted in three or four vignettes on each spread. The book is a fresh and amusing slant on sibling adjustment and should capture the imagination of any big brother or sister.—Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA

From Booklist

The conceit is this: a baby is born and immediately begins keeping a journal. She meets her big sister, tries to puzzle out a mobile, wonders why she can’t go to school, and learns she can grab things. (Note to self: grab “cats, ears, elephants, ankles, and Vermont.”) This diary has some very funny asides, but the problem is that some may be over the heads of the intended age group. For instance, “Some things are noses, some are taxicabs, and some are Belgians.” Cute, if you know what a Belgian is. The Quentin Blake–style watercolors don’t always mine the fun as much as they could, but the spacious design, with its tall white pages and scattering of vignettes, is pleasing to the eye. Try this with kids slightly older than the usual preschool crowd, and you’ll get some giggles. Grades K-1. --Ilene Cooper

More About the Author

James Solheim wasn't born writing, but he started soon after he learned the difference between a pencil and a cheese doodle. His early scribbles in mustard on the walls led to funny books like BORN YESTERDAY and IT'S DISGUSTING--AND WE ATE IT (and a time-out in the kitchen corner).

At age eight, Solheim began keeping his childhood writings in a special box. He says, "I lost the first book I ever made. Page after page of life-or-death drama, including desperate last-second weenie roasts and full-color illustrations of action-packed snowman building. Losing that book meant I had to keep my writings somewhere other than on the floor under a tangle of Batman briefs and discarded bubble gum."

No wonder Solheim grew up to write of a world where newborns are flamboyant authors, and dogs preside over international writing clubs (see his new book BORN YESTERDAY). At once a hilarious look at a baby's first view of the world and a sweet celebration of family, BORN YESTERDAY is a laugh-out-loud funny book about an infant born with an urge to write!

James Solheim gives inspiring talks at schools and conferences across America (and performs Norwegian folk dance in his jammies when he's supposed to be in bed). Visit http://jamessolheim.com to learn more! Contact him at jim@jamessolheim.com.

The book itself was good. I thought I was getting a new item, but recieved the book with someone's name sticker on it. I could not get this off of the book, so was unable to give this for a gift as it was intended. Very disappointing!

I recommend this book to any one who loves to laugh out loud. My first graders, my student teacher, and myself enjoyed a great laugh as I read it to introduce that writing is hard work, but very fun and that all of us can write.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Delight, October 15, 2010

Working as a youth services librarian, I see hundreds of books for children each year. This one is outstanding! I read it aloud to our staff this morning and we laughed at every page. The book strikes a nice balance between understanding real infants and imagining them yearning to grow, change and be BIGGER each and every day. The text really does hit every note just right and it reads aloud beautifully. This is a perfect book to use when introducing the concepts of humor writing and voice with older kids. Everyone else will get a giggle out of it.
