Pleasantly Surprised,
By A Customer
This review is from: Born for You (Audio CD)
I've never been a fan of the vocals of Kathie Lee since my personal preference is alternative or rock but I have a real appreciation for beautiful vocals and arrangements. "Born For You" is a wonderful surprise to me. I didn't expect to fall so in love with it. In fact, I thought I'd probably hand it right over to my Mom, but instead I think I'll buy her a copy of her own to enjoy. I've listened many times now and each time I find another favorite track. I highly recommend giving this CD a chance. You'll be totally surprised at the quality of both Kathie Lee's voice and the selections of the tracks.

what a beautiful idea to have a soundtrack of your life...,
By Kathy Bennett (Tennessee) - See all my reviews

Kathie Lee Gifford's cd is beautifully done and is a soundtrack of a life. Each selection ties in with the others in a smooth-flowing way. "Child in Me" features Cody and Cassidy Gifford. "Only My Pillow Knows" conveys the hurt, sadness and heartbreak of betrayal as well as any song on that topic I have ever heard. The entire collection is beautiful and comes with a booklet of photos as well as the printed lyrics. Bravo, Kathie Lee, for showing your depth of talent and emotion. We can only hope for more wonderful music.

give it a fair chance,

While I find Kathie Lee quite annoying and intolerable at times this is a nice "adult" cd. If it were someone else I think it would be getting better feedback. In this the days of "artists" barely out of their teens and music so loud and free of any meaningful lyrics, it is nice to come across a cd that you can put on and either sit and listen or let it blend into the background. It seems alot of Howard Stern fans (of which I am) are really using this forum as way to sting Mrs. Gifford. Granted she can be cloying, but c'mon lighten up!

An enjoyable orchestrated album,

Born for You provides for a wonderful listening experiance especially in the evening. With its lush orchestrations and charming melodies, along with Kathie Lees sweet voice it makes for a fresh soothing sound. Please ignore the one star review. The person clearly did not even listen the whole way through and was downright nasty when there is no reason to be. On the Track one section of Circle Game with Dolly Parton in the background is one of my favorites and Sweet Dreams on track 2 makes you feel like your in the American folk days with it's harmonica. Pillow Talk was also very well done.

Born For You Bores,
By Rick (Queens, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Born for You (Audio CD)
Kathie Lee's album is a poor example of an actress or a showhost who tries to be an artist. Her first three songs bores me to tears and she shows no sincerity and absolutely no soul. She is no Barbara Streisand. Kathie sounds just like a Karaoke singer. I think I should get my money back on this album. I would not recommend anyone to buy this album. This is a waste of time and money.

Sorry,

With a vibrato nearly an octave wide, she sounds as if she is nearing senior citizen status. A good voice instructor or enrollment in a good music school would be of great advantage. Save your money.

Kathie is a complete unknown in Britain. I only came across her music when I learned that Dolly Parton contributed backing vocals to one of the songs on this album. I knew that Dolly would only have done this if Kathie were a good singer - and I was right although this was not the first of Kathie's albums that I bought. I actually started with Sentimental and the Christmas album, both albums filled with covers of classic songs, mainly romantic ballads. I loved them both so I immediately bought this album, which also contains several covers but contains some original material too. While this is not quite as exciting as those other two albums, it is still an album of a very high quality.
Kathie's voice has a tender, dreamy quality ideally suited to the romantic ballads that dominate this album, just as they dominated the other two albums that I mentioned. Kathie is less suited to dramatic up-tempo songs like Don't rain on my parade, but some of you will appreciate its inclusion as it provides a change of tempo. The covers include Circle game (Joni Mitchell), It goes like it goes (from Norma Rae), Moondance (Van Morrison), Here's that rainy day (from the songbook of Jimmy Van Huesen), Before the parade passes by (from Hello Dolly), Don't rain on my parade (from Funny girl), I got lost in his arms (from Annie get your gun), On my way to you (co-written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman with Michel LeGrand), Sunrise sunset (from Fiddler on the roof) and Try to remember (from The Fantastiks). Some of the other songs are originals but it may be that some are covers. Note that Sweet dreams is NOT a cover of the song made famous by Patsy Cline although I'm sure that Kathie could sing that song superbly. The album is built around the concept of Kathie's life story. In that respect, it falls short - it sounds to me like a series of songs that relate to particular events in Kathie's life but no more than that. I don't mind that as Kathie is among my favorite singers and doesn't need to worry about clever concepts. The album includes a 24 page booklet containing full lyrics and plenty of family photographs. It is always hard for me to pick out highlights from an album so full of quality but here I'll nominate Born for you (which opens and closes the album), Circle game, Sweet dreams, Moondancing (with Collin Raye on backing vocals) and Only my pillow knows (with Dolly Parton on backing vocals). If you are new to Kathie's music, I'd recommend starting with Sentimental or the Christmas album both of which I reviewed a long time ago - or the more recent gospel album, which I've yet to hear. If you enjoy those, you'll enjoy this too.

I was lucky enough to find this CD at Big Lots! I bought it because I like Kathie Lee - I didn't even know that she could sing. I LOVE THE CD. -- every song except the Parade one! But every other song I LOVE! Her voice is wonderful and the selection of songs is great. I plan on buying one for a friend. The arrangements are beautiful. I am so happy that I found it! Thanks to Kathie Lee!! Love, Marilyn Ryan

Kathie Lee needs a drink of water,
By A Customer
This review is from: Born for You (Audio CD)
I just HAD to buy this album because I'm a big "Regis & Kathie Lee LIVE" fan. But WAS I EVER SHOCKED to hear this album after all the bragging on TV! 1) Kathie Lee needs a drink of water, mouth noices (like cottonmouth) are audible; 2) every song sounds the same; 3) lots of breathing going on; 4) I forced myself to listen to the whole thing once, but it was really too much; 5) Maybe she can actually sing, but on this album, it sounds like she is PRETENDING to sing. I will stay a fan of hers, but definitely NOT for this album.. She makes a better talk show host. I really did WANT to like this album, so I'm sorry I didn't. Maybe you will feel differently!
