Book Description

October 1, 1998
Photographer Mattias Klum takes us into the soul of the Borneo rainforest. Patiently waiting behind blinds, shooting from platforms high in the trees, or skimming above the forest canopy in a hot air balloon, Klum has captured the mystery, beauty, and complexity of Borneo's renowned but virtually impassable Danum Valley. He mounted the Borneo expedition to photograph the rainforest as it really is: filled with darkness and shadows shot through with streaks of light. Teeming with life, the rainforest promises unexpected encounters with creatures large and small, as its jungle of trees and undergrowth reach for the sky in infinite shades of green. Klum's keen lens captures it all. From a bizarre bearded pig to the increasingly rare Low's pitcher plant, from the king cobra to the delicate damselfly, Borneo Rainforest shows us an ancient, complex, irreplaceable ecosystem. Passionate descriptions and a journal of the expedition's events round out this homage to an extraordinary place.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Swedish nature photographer Klum here offers a dreamier display of the territory covered in his children's book Exploring the Rain Forest (Sterling Pub., 1997). Lyrical observations accompany exotic imagery shrouded in foliage, muted light, and a steamy atmosphere. A wide range of plant and animal life, from insect-devouring pitcher plants to primates, is exhibited in more than 160 photographs taken within the Bornean ecosystem. The quality of Klum's work is consistently high, and captions are provided for each photo, although the book's randomness and Klum's artistic flair may clash with those seeking more direct whole-animal photography. The book ends with Klum's Borneo diary, providing insight into the challenges and patience required to obtain such magnificent photos. Recommended for large or specialized nature and art collections.?Raymond Hamel, Wisconsin Regional Primate Research Ctr. Lib., Madison

Review

Nearly impassable, teeming with life, and as breathtaking as a black-naped monarch flycatchers that call it home, Borneo's Danum valley reveals itself to photographer Mattias Klum in Borneo Rainforest. His journal entries shed light on this shadowy ecosystem on one of the world's largest islands. -- National Geographic Traveler

3.0 out of 5 stars Artistic View of Borneo's Rain Forrest., March 15, 2000
This review is from: Borneo Rainforest (Paperback)
I purchased this book because I am planning a trip to Borneo and I wanted to learn more about the Borneo rain forest. The book is very well done. The photographs are very artistic and beautiful. Some of the creatures I have never seen before. However, I was disappointed that art took presidence over instruction. I did not learn as much about the plants and animals of the rain forest as I had hoped. If you are looking for an atlas or encyclopedic report keep looking.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is a photographic journal not a guide book, September 29, 2000
This review is from: Borneo Rainforest (Paperback)
Mattias Klum is a very famous nature photographer, who has a unique style. He is not into just making portraits of animals and birds. Every photograph of his that I have seen communicates a whole story of the things he is taking pictures of. He has spent considerable time in rain forests, and communicates his experience very well.

Unfortunately, most of his books are printed only in Swedish, and he has not not got as much exposure outside here. You should check out other books by him too.

Mattias's work also exhibits a different nature photographic aesthetic from what most people in North America are used to seeing.
