5.0 out of 5 stars marvelously played by today's best young string quartet, December 16, 1998

This review is from: Borodin: String Quintet No. 1; String Quartet No. 1 (Audio CD)
When one listens to this recording, it is obvious that Manhattan's Arcata String Quartet will one day be included in lists of the great classical musicians. They have been coached by some of the finest classical groups in the world, including their close aquaintances, the Tokyo string quartet. Members of "Arcata" have worked alongside names such as Zukerman, Perlman, Gingold, and many others. Each member of "Arcata" is already extremely accomplished with his/her own instrument, but this does not seem to hinder their communication within the quartet. They are a very young quartet, but I encourage you also to listen to their recording of some of Respighi's compositions, which is placed alongside early recordings of the Tokyo String Quartet. The Arcata String Quartet has the rough edges of any young artists because they have not yet had the time with which to define their own style as chamber musicians. They are also joined in this recording by cellist David Geber, well-known master in his field.
