5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific CD, November 23, 1999

This CD is truly a must buy for anybody who enjoys latin guitar music, spiced up with tight background accompaniment. I really never get tired of listening to it, and in fact it pretty much lives in my CD player. It's uplifting, fun, and (guys take note) pretty darn romantic as well...

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended top-down convertible cruising music., May 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Borrasca (Audio CD)
If I might add to Amazon's "recommended list" of music-to-cruise-in-your-convertible-by, this is my Number 1 suggestion. Smooth and relaxing, without being soporific, Liebert's music takes me back to the beach even when I am halfway through a nine-hour flight home. It's like a gold rum and tonic with double lime for your soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Which album was this?, October 15, 1998

I love Ottmar, and I have all of his CD's. This was his first, and you'll know that after you have listened to all the others. Melodies created here are continued on most subsequent CDs.

In fact, that's my biggest frustration with Ottmar: I can't tell his albums apart. In fact, it's very sad to say that his phenominal guitar playing, haunting melodies, creative percussion and unique arrangements all sound the same after 6 CDs. It's not that the music isn't good -- in fact, it's great. But darn it if half the tracks on "Opium" or "Hours Between Night and Day" don't sound just like the ones here.

Still, I couldn't live without at least a few of his works, and this earlier CD plus "Solo Para Ti" or "Nuevo Flamenco" will leave you wanting more.

Finally I've found an adequate companion to me favorite music collection.
This album is almost as great as Guitar on Fire by Alex Fox.
You'll never get tired of this incredible Flamenco tunes.

I heard this album almost ten years ago and became an Ottmar Fan! This is great, sassy, contagious music, If you like this album also check NOUVEAU FLAMENCO which is also great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply superb * * * * * * * * * - even 10 stars are not enou, May 8, 2001
This review is from: Borrasca (Audio CD)
I first heard this album in a shop in Barcelona and bought it immediately many years ago. Even after so many years, the music is still beautiful and effortless, lively most of the time and quiet and soothing at other times. You don't need to get used to the guitar strings - Ottmar's guitar rhythms will grab you by the heart strings!! The recording is so clear that one can hear the musicians emotions behind each note. It's a must play when guests are over and they invariably end up buying a copy for themselves.

I heard this music for the first time when having dinner at an Italian restaurant in The Hague and initially thought that it was the Gipsy Kings. I have ordered this CD and it was no dissappointment. Personally I think it is one of the best of this artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth and Sultry, March 29, 2009
This review is from: Borrasca (Audio CD)
Classically-trained Latin guitarist Ottmar Liebert scored a Grammy nomination with Borrasca, which means "tempest" or "storm." Every track is a delightfully enchanting blend of Flamenco-flavored Latin Jazz, superbly recorded and mixed. Great background music for dinner, reading, relaxing and sex. One of those rare albums that can be played repeatedly without becoming boring.

Ottmar's third album (Marita: Shadows and Storms, was the first and subsequently reissued by Higher Octave Music as Nouveau Flamenco), features Ottmar with Jon Gagan on bass and synthesizer, Dave Bryant on percussion and drums, and, co-producer/engineer Dominic Camardella on piano, plus horn arrangements that create a mariachi flavor. Gary Meek played tenor and alto saxophones and Jeff Elliot played trumpet and flugelhorn.

Ottmar wrote all the tracks plus, co-produced, engineered and mixed at Sound Design Studio, Santa Barbara, California. Production, engineering and mixing are absolutely superb and reflect a perfectionist at work.

The album is an eclectic mix or Latin styles. For example tracks 1, 3 and 11 are rhumbas; track 2 is a cumbia; track 4, a merengue; tracks 6 and 8 are rhumba-salsas; track 5, a bossa nova; track 12, a bulerhumba; and, track 12, a bulerias.

Even though this album was recorded and produced during 1990-1991, it has not diminished with time and like good wine has improved with age. Sit back and enjoy. Like great wine, it is good to the last drop.
