3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent story but be forewarned about religious content **SPOILERS**, February 6, 2011

The story and characters are excellent as usual. With a little adjustment, I didn't mind the religious theme, the progress of the female lead who finds meaning in the faith she grew up in but has not thought about it too much before. I liked learning about LDS culture. What disturbed me was that the male lead, who is defined by keeping his own counsel and by his tolerance, becomes a kind of spiritual guide for her that seemed jarringly out of character and brought me completely out of the story. There is one moment in particular when "he looked at her until she felt like squirming" when he challenges her to explain why she believes the way she does. When she is unable to explain to his satisfaction he says, "I'm not sure that's a good enough reason", and she realizes he is right. She starts to read and and her knees become tough from all the time she spends on them praying. This changed the book from a compelling story to a flagrant religious parable, not what I need or wish for. The note at the end says the author is "writing for an LDS audience" and that is clearly accomplished, but now I feel excluded from an author with whom I had previously connected . I am disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite a Change!, February 19, 2011

This review is from: Borrowed Light (Mass Market Paperback)
I have been a fan of Carla Kelly for years.I have read virtually all of her books, including Daughter of Fortune, which was hard to find, & also Here's to the Ladies, about cavalry life on the prairie after the Civil War.
I was very surprised by the content of the book. I had no idea that the Mormon Church was going to play such a pivotal role in her story. She is an awesome writer, & her characters are always believable.I got tired of the bodice rippers a long time ago!! I deeply respect Ms. Kelly's right to her beliefs, but I did feel like the story had a little bit of proselytizing in it. I love my own church & my deeply held belief in Jesus Christ,& I have always liked Ms. Kelly's inclusion of faith in her stories. I just wish in this book it hadn't been with such a heavy hand.

I have read just about all of Ms Kelly's books and have to say I enjoyed them all immensely e.g. Marrying the Captain, The Admiral's Penniless Bride, Marrying the Royal Marine and couldn't wait for this new book.

If I had read anything in a short description of this book that there was heavy a emphasis on the Mormon church, I would have passed. I have nothing against religion but I don't like to be preached to and this book was very preachy.

Stick with your regency romance novels and if you must inflict your religious beliefs, state it in the description!!!
