Book Description

An accident on a frozen highway brings two strangers together.

Brian Morrison has no recollection of what placed him on that icy stretch hundreds of miles from home. In his line of business, memory loss was unacceptable and accountability was crucial.

Upon her parents’ death, Emily Brennan became the sole guardian of her brilliant, yet eccentric brother. Her devotion to protect him from a world that shunned the abnormal made her do the unthinkable. She stole designs from National Marine Dynamics…and now she was on the run.

Only an hour from the promise of safety, Emily witnesses the car behind her spin out of control on an icy stretch of highway. Fear dictated that she should flee, but the body slumped on the shoulder of the road appealed to her humanity.

Emily and Brian are two strangers thrown together by an errant patch of ice. Would the truths of their identities tear them apart or would they unite in battle against an egomaniac that threatened the safety of innocent civilians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming! One-click it! January 2, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
An accident turns to tide for a romance that was ill-fated and yet destined. She's a brilliant scientist and he's the security expert with a military past. The catch is that she's got a brilliant brother too and he's mildly idiot savant... and he's created a monster machine that they must steal from the evil corporation before they kill someone with it.

I liked the premise of the machine which isn't the standard war tool or bomb. Brian, the hero, is sent to catch Emily and her brother. It's only obvious that she'll get caught since he's a professional, but what he does with her isn't typical. Instead it's sweet, a trifle whimsical, and (as always with Maureen's books) absolutely charming.

If you're looking for drawn-out angst of "do I love him"/"do I love her" go somewhere else. These character know their own minds and hearts and are ready to seize it with both hands as true love should. That's a refreshing change from the artificially drawn out love affairs of today's popular dramas and I'm so glad.

All in all, a wonderful read. Go ahead and one-click this one... you won't be sorry.

4.0 out of 5 stars good, but not great March 5, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the book, but would not have been happy had I spent more than .99 on it.
On the plus side, Colin, Emily & Brian were all characters that I cared about. I liked that Brian got along with Colin and Ben.

On the minus side, there were a few places where things happened that surprised me - and felt like a huge, unexplained leap. Like how did anyone surprise Brian by getting into the "safe place" they were in, without him hearing? That was just pretty bizarre to me. Right in the middle of his sentence?

Also, at the end, there was no explanation of how they got out of the situation they were in. One minute we were in the office, in the middle of the fight, and the next minute at home, and it was over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good romantic suspense! January 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Borrowed Time is a great book to cozy up with on a cold winter's night! (a few typographical errors, but such a good story, easy to overlook). Excellent characterization and I liked how the relationship between Emily and Brian progressed from mistrust and misunderstandings to trust and love even in the midst of danger and an uncertain future. Emily's guilt and devotion to her savant brother was touching and the pace was frantic and suspenseful as they tried to outrun and outsmart the evil corporation owner determined to kill them and steal Colin's design. I look forward to more romantic suspense from Maureen Miller!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing September 2, 2011
By Jmee*
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was extremely disappointed with this novel and don't understand where the 5 star reviews came from. Starts off well but then plateaus at a boring level up until the most anticlimactic climax of any book I've read. Not only anticlimactic but also choppy and repetitive. Save your money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Borrowed Time February 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Based on the 3 great reviews, I decided to try my first book by this author. This was not the usual type of book I enjoy. The "romance" became tedious for me and I ended up skim reading those parts. For someone who enjoys more focus on a romance, I think this would be a good read. Personally, I prefer a good thriller with a little romance "on the side." Although it seemed a little far-fetched, I enjoyed the thriller plot.

Often when reading a book, I find myself wishing it would continue a little longer. With this book, I found myself anxious to get to the end.

The end of the book mentioned another book, by the same author, that is set in Hawaii. Since I really like Hawaii, I'm going to give that one a try to see if I like that one better.

4.0 out of 5 stars As good as Nora Roberts August 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Emily Brennan has always looked after her book smart, definitely not street smart, eccentric engineer brother leaving little time to have a life of her own. Protecting him against what appears to be an overzealous opportunistic boss, Emily finds herself submerged in a race for their lives. Ex national intelligence officer turned company man Brian Morrison is sent to apprehend the brother and sister. One accident, a little amnesia and successfully finding the people he was sent to find, Brian realizes they should be running and makes the decision to run with them. Love, trust issues and staying alive become foremost......

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting story! May 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This was a very interesting book. I have never read anything about marine engineering nor do I know anything about it (perhaps it is because I live in the Midwest and um, well, we don't have much water around here?). I enjoy books where the characters are together for most of the book and there is a lot of interaction and dialogue rather than just the thoughts of the hero or the heroine. Maureen Miller does a nice job of this, which is why I like her books so much! I like suspense but the romance/relationship part is probably a little higher on my list of interests in a book and this book fit these requirements nicely. As for the characters in the book, I felt Emily and Brian were good for each other. Neither of them was very open about themselves or their past so you don't know a lot about them, but you know enough for this book and the situation they are currently involved. I really liked Colin - Emily's brother. He was a hoot as was his friend, Ben. I enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.
