5.0 out of 5 stars The Borzoi
The Borzoi is a perfect book for the serious fancier, with extraordinary visuals that include photographs, drawings, and anatomy sketches. Borzoi history is obscured by time and the various types, but the well documented maps and early sighthounds provide a great foundation to understanding the present types.

This book is completly inaccurate, it may have some novelty value for those wishing a good read but for the dedicated borzoi enthuasiast I wouldn't bother, Lorraine Groshans 'the complete borzoi' would be a better buy.

The Borzoi is a perfect book for the serious fancier, with extraordinary visuals that include photographs, drawings, and anatomy sketches. Borzoi history is obscured by time and the various types, but the well documented maps and early sighthounds provide a great foundation to understanding the present types.

The drawings and wonderful pedigrees give ample resources to tracing English and American bloodlines from the early 1900's to 1997. The gene pool is a broad one and well organized for easy use. The genetics section is also user-friendly and a difficult to find subject of great importance. It hits all the topics of the breed, how to pick a good dog, breeding, health, plus some hard to find subjects; with a fresh approach and a usable depth of information.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical advice with a humerous approach, August 10, 2001
I found this book full of useful practical advice and knowledge. I am new to this beautiful breed and use this book on a daily basis. A serious book but sprinkled with little gems of humour. Loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, January 1, 2005
This is an excellent book for someone looking to get into the Borzoi showing commuinity. Not for someone who just wants a pet Borzoi or for someone who already knows a lot about Borzoi (unless you want to do a bit of english pedigree research). I'm just getting into showing Borzoi and I found the book very informitive.

This book goes into a fair ammount of detail on conformation, bloodlines, breeding, showing, and genetics. I did happen to find the photo-manipulated pictures a bit of an annoyance though.

"The Complete Borzoi" by Lorraine Groshans (a fairly difficult book to find) and any of the BCOA publications are much better than this book. But, it's worth reading.

"The Complete Borzoi" by Lorraine Groshans and any of the BCOA publications are much better than this book. This book is very basic and is for the rank beginner. It is a fun read and a good start, but hopefully anyone interested in this wonderful breed will also read more. If you are looking for veterinary medical info that is professional in nature, you can try the Veterinary 5 Minute Consult. This is for the very serious dog enthusiast.

Great basic book for the new Borzoi owner, or someone just curious about the breed. Only has basic information on the breed.

I was amazed at the lack of knowledge expressed by the writer of this book. Down to things like according to the book a borzoi has hare feet at the front and cat feet at the back.......only if your dog is walking backwards would that be true! I'm surprised this got published.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now I know why in the 1950's our grandma told us Communists were bad., April 2, 2007

I think this book is very good. I like the history of the dog's domestication, and I especially like how the Borzoi was developed in Russia.

When we were children back in the 1950's our parents and grandparents drummed into us to hate Communists. Of course, we went along with the instructions because we were children. By the time I got to college, in political science I was taught that Communism was just another form of political structure.

The poignant account in this book about the woman who had her hired man take the remaining noble Borzoi to be killed before the Bolshevics got to them gave me the real reason for hating them. The Bolshevics must have been totally useless persons if they slaughtered Borzoi when looting country estates of the nobles...
