Biography

Bo Diddley (December 30, 1928 – June 2, 2008), born Ellas Otha Bates, was an original and influential American rock ‘n roll singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He was known as “The Originator” because of his key role in the transition from blues music to rock ‘n roll, influencing a host of legendary acts including Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.

Editorial Reviews

These days Bo Diddley's credentials are as a black rock 'n' roller but his great Checker catalogue tells his real story - as one of the great blues and R&B figures of the post-war era. Bo's Blues assembles twenty-two diamond-hard blues offerings recorded for Checker between the years 1959 and 1967, featuring the likes of bassist Willie Dixon, harmonica blowers Billy Boy Arnold and Lester Davenport, pianists Lafayette Leake and Otis Spann and of course, the maraca man Jerome Green (immortalized here on Bring It To Jerome). Doo wop legends The Moonglows ''doo-waaah'' on 1955's Diddy Wah Diddy. Also here is 1956's Who Do You Love, in which a vicious R&B beat meets surrealist lyric (''I travel forty-seven miles of barbed wire/use a cobra snake for a neck-tie''). The song became a rock standard - Ronnie Hawkins and The Band rocked out the number in true Bo style for the Band's The Last Waltz movie and it became a UK hit for Juicy Lucy on Vertigo in 1970.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine addition to the Chess essentials, January 18, 2004
This review is from: Bo's Blues (Audio CD)
"Bo's Blues" brings together 22 of Bo Diddley's more blues-oriented sides from the Chess catalog, many of which you probably have already ("I'm A Man", "Who Do You Love", "Before You Accuse Me", the hit single "You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover" etc.).
But there is also some rare stuff here, including "I'm Looking For A Woman", "Run Diddley Daddy", the soulful "Bo's Blues", a (predictable) follow-up to "I'm A Man" titled "I'm Bad", the superb, driving boogie of "Live My Life" and "Blues, Blues", the swaggering shuffles "Little Girl" and the harp-driven "She's Fine, She's Mine", the melodic "Heart-o-Matic Love", and a silly, jive-loaded "Cops And Robbers" that features maraca shaker Jerome Green more than Diddley.

This is not the place to start (that would be MCA/Chess' "His Best" or the magnificent "Chess Box"), but once you have the essentials, this well-annotated 22-track collection is a fine stop to make.
