Great router, small quality problems,

This review is from: Bosch 1613AEVSK 2-1/4-Horsepower Electronic Plunge Router Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
As a 30 year woodworker, I've always favored Rockwell/Delta and Porter Cable tools. The Mod. 1613EVS router (the forerunner to the current 1613AEVS?) was my first Bosch tool and I immediately loved it. It is ergonomically handy and quieter than my other routers. The depth control is very precise and easy to use. Power is more than adequate, though I have never use it in a table with the larger bit sizes. My only dissapointments, after two years of use, were the immediate breakage of the plastic chip deflector and recently, the breakage of the assembly that holds the guide templates. The latter is a serious problem since I do a lot of work on a Leigh dovetail jig, which cannot be used unless the router has a template guide. The part is back-ordered. Breakage is to be expected in any hard-used tool; but this router has not been subject to hard use and the part seems to be made out of a cast pot-metal that was brittle. On balance, it is a very well designed product. Because its such a nice tool, I'm aggravated that I can't use it while I am awaiting its repair.

Clean & Smooth,

This is the first plunge router I have ever owned. Soft start electronic ramping of rotor speed is pretty cool. I am used to having router rip my hand of when starting up. Speed control circuitry has its limitations in resonding to heavy use, although should be expected on feedback circuit. One has to remember not to get to greedy on the amount of material they are trying to digout and allow bit to do the cutting.Plunging action is very smooth compared to all others I have tried. Especially like depth adjustment controls. Dust cover is excellent at keeping chips and dust off the face. Locking shaft lever looks to be an after thought but does work well. Better quality wrench than my loved PC. All in all a very nice router. Bosch seems to make some pretty nice tools. Recommend.

1613AEVS Top of the list!,

It was either this one or the Dewalt DW621, the two best routers in this class. For the readers sake I will compare its features to the Dewalt. Both machines are 2HP, both have a smooth plunge but the Dewalt wins in this respect. They both have dust extraction, Bosch via an attachment and the Dewalt built into one of the plunge posts. If you do not hook up the Dewalt's dust extraction you will inhale the dust and eat the chips. They both employ Soft Start and are variable speed with constant speed technology. As for motor noise the Bosch certainly wins, it has half the noise of the Dewalt, and is comfortable to operate without hearing protection. Both machines have micro adjustment knobs, the Bosch's can be adjusted while the plunge is locked, the Dewalt's cannot. The micro gauge reading on the Bosch is much easier to understand than on the Dewalt. I like the 1/8 step graduations on the depth stop rather than the three post adjustable on the Dewalt. This feature is a user preference you can make your own assumption. The base on the Bosch is larger and more conventional than the Dewalt's. As for quality you can't go wrong with either, time will tell. Bosch makes an excellent product, take the quality for the best and study the features you need.
