Bosch 1619EVS 15 Amp 3-1/4-Horsepower Variable Speed Plunge Base Router with 1/4-Inch and 1/2-Inch Collets

I must say that combining the 3 1/4HP, with an opening that is 3 3/4 inches wide, and the unique spring disabling mechanism, make this beauty the number one under the table piece of equipment. The 3 and 1/4HP gives you more than enough power to handle even the large 3 1/2" popular kitchen cabinet panel raising bits. The larger opening, gives you plunge capabilities with the larger bits. Larger bits require multiple passes. Their are two ways to make multiple passes, one is move the fence, the other is use the adjustable turret, and sequentially plunge the bit. The Bosch 1619EVS enables you to do that. That is not an option is usually available on other routers due to their reduced openings.
The other thing to rave about is the spring defeat mechanism. Push a lever and the spring disappears from action. It free plunges, while still remaining in the base. (The new Australian model does that, but you have to remove the spring. No fun in a dusty environment.) This is important, because, when you have a router mounted upside down in a table, and you want to plunge the base, what often happens is that you lift the entire table. Now you are trying to compress a spring upside down, while holding the table down, and locking a mechanism all at the same time. It is enough to make you go to a fixed base router. :-) The problem with that is, except with the Porter Cable 3 1/4HP fixed base, their isn't any other routers out there that give you 3 1/4HP without going to a plunge base. In a table you preferably want the additional horsepower, even though you usually don't need more than 1 1/2 or 2 horses.
The soft start feature, and having the smart electronics, combined with more power than you need, enables you to have a constant bit speed. When the going gets rough, the smart electronics pours on just the right amount of power, to keep it running constant. That is as long as their is enough power to spare. So the additional horsepower is better for that.
The big advantage of the Bosch router line, is their fine adjustment knob. Nothing is more frustrating than to try and achieve a perfect setting, getting it close, then loosening the collar, and it jumps completely away from where you had it. The Bosch enables you to get a close gross setting with the collar-clamp, then dial in the perfect setting with the fine adjusting knob. No need to loosen the clamp. Just tweak the fine adjuster. That is sweet.
What are the cons? No router has it all. That is why multiple routers are a good option. On the downside, is the weight. It is huge. At 19 pounds, it's a behemoth, but under the table, who cares. It also is louder than the competition. Makitas are the quietest. Also the Fein RT-1800 is much quieter, much lighter at 12 pounds, gives you 3 1/4HP in a plunge, is super engineered, but you can not plunge a 3 1/2" bit into the base, and the spring does not defeat. The funny thing about noise levels, is that they all make a lot of noise when they start biting into the wood.
So their you have it. Combining the fine adjustment, with the large horsepower, the extra large opening in the base, the spring defeat feature, and the Bosch precision quality, you have a monster that can not be beat for an under the table installed router.
I'm not into yeah this, and boo that. I think their are a lot of great routers out there, and each has it's own advantages. I just think this Bosch fits a much needed nitch. Hope this helps.

I upgraded to this machine after burning out two on/off switches on my Bosch 1617EVS router.

For the most part, this 1619 resides under a router table. With the extended handle that comes standard with the router, under table adjustments are quick. Roll the large diamer handle between your hands, and the router can be moved up or down about 2 inches in 15 seconds.

I've made about 40 raised panel doors with this router so far, and I really like the power it has. My panel raising bit is 2.5 inches in diameter. I remove about 5/16 in my first pass, and then take off 1/16 to get a nice clean surface. Taking 5/16 in one pass with this large bit does not bog this machine down.

The on/off switch is built into the handle which makes for convenient free-hand operation. The switch is difficult to reach when the machine is mounted under the table, but an auxillary switch on the router table solves that problem.

I also like the built in lock on the spindle. Bits can be changed with only one wrench.

Superb Router! I have mine in a router table. It handles everything extremely well - from the smallest bit to the largest panel cutter. It is relatively quiet, and never bogs down with the electronic speed control. Soft start is excellent, although I don't use mine out of the table much. The depth settings are easily accomplished, repeatable, and accurate. The speed control is a bit of a stretch under the table, but otherwise I can find no fault with this router. It is one of the best tools in my shop. If you want a powerful router with finess, that does just about everything, this is it. A quality 5-star tool in all respects.

This is an excellent plunge router with a single exception, the plunge release lever is very difficult to operate with your left thumb, I simply cannot push the lever down far enough to fully disengage the plunge lock without shifting my natural grip on the handle. Other than that, the plunge is smooth, the router feels comfortable in my hands with a minimum of vibration. I was surprised by the lightness and balance of such a powerful router.

The mechanism used to defeat the plunge spring works flawlessly and is very easy to both engage and disengage if you read the instructions carefully. This feature is what sold me on the router in the first place, as it will spend most of its time in the router table. No need to buy a ... router lift accessory with this machine! It came with a fine adjust extension and can be easily micro-adjusted while under the table. I was also delighted to find a dust pick-up attachment in the package, I did not expect that!

Ok first of all let me say if you going to have only one router, this is the one to buy. I'm not going to go into everything that's great about it because the other reviews do it so well. Here is the bad.

- Dust Collector is flimsy. I broke mine in the first month, it tipped over and cracked off the collector. When it wasn't broken the dust collector was awesome. Since I can't seem to find a replacment, I just rigged it using duct tape and some glue.

- I wish they had not put the power cord on the top, it be great to be able to stand the thing on its head to change bits. with the dust collector on the tool it makes it a little ackward in changing bits.

- The manual is well a bit vague on a lot of the details, but you will quickly figure things out. Pretty simple tool all in all.

I know I'm being extremely pick and if bosch had to fix those things...I would say the 1619 was PERFECT.

All in all, knowing what i know now about the tool if the thing had to break down tomorrow I'd buy it again. This was my first bosch product and it certainly won't be my last based on the performance of this tool.

- Update: June 30, 2007. Still going strong. I love this router extremely accurate plunge routing(though a little stiff). I have done some stressfull routes and haven't taxed the motor. Bought a new dust collection hood for hand held dust collection and now hang a hose from a bungie cord from the ceiling...a world of difference dust collection is now a breaze. I still don't like the fact that with the dust collection hood on there really isn't a side in which to lay it down for changing bits or just because I don't want to release the depth.

P.S. found the parts i needed by calling bosch parts and service...they were great.

Overall Very happy - I'd buy it again.

Three years ago I had an impromptu manicure on one finger from a router, and since then I've been more than a bit reluctant to go near another router.

I've been feeling braver recently, and after considerable research I purchased the Bosch 1619 along with a Veritas router table. Virtually all of the 3HP+ routers have more than enough power to do any work so the decision criteria had to be based on something other than sheer power. Important to me was ease of bit changes, runout and quiet(least noise).

I haven't been disappointed, making raised panels in oak and walnut is easy-peasy with the Bosch 1619-Veritas combo.

There is a bolt that holds the step adjuster to the base. The bolt is held to the base by a compression washer which is visible when you remove the base plate from the router.

Mounted upside down in a table, this washer is the only thing supporting the entire weight of the router. The adjusting rod locks into this step adjuster allowing you to adjust the height of the router from under the table. There is a button that you push to release the spring pressure. A nice feature considering the weight of the router.

This washer slipped off of the bolt and the router dropped like a rock in my table when the machine was running. Luckily I have a paddle switch which allowed for a quick power down.

I returned it to the store and the sales gal called Bosch to see if they have revised this part. I will find out tomorrow if they have redesigned this little bolt. If it was machined with a washer type head to prevent it from slipping through the base, the problem would be solved but there is no way that the compression washer will hold the weight of this machine under a table. Even if they machined a groove in the bolt and used a snap ring to hold it, that would work.

In fairness, it would probably work fine as a plunge router but I would not buy it for use under a router table. If Bosch has not revised this part, I will get a refund and look into another manufacturer. Too bad because it really is a nice machine and it has all the features you would want in a router.

If I hear any positive news, I will update this review.

03/26/2009 - Bosch explained to the store that they had a series of these washers that were undersized and they found their way into the production line. They shipped 2 new washers to the store and we reassembled the router. Guess what? Same problem!
I released the locking mechanism while holding the router upside down and it fell to the end of the plunge. The washer slipped off right along with it. I returned the router and the sales gal gave me a refund.
In the upright position, used as a plunge router, this lock does not come into play. So, as a plunge router, I would recommend it highly. Lots of power, soft start, one wrench bit removal, 6 speeds, on/off switch built into the grip, the works. Really a nice tool but not for use in a router table.

I bought this model with the intention of using it exclusively in my new Woodpeckers router table. Though Woodpeckers has a broad selection of router lifts, all manufactured tables I considered are quite expensive. This router seemed appropriate. Using it in the table is a pleasure. Though I make adjustments under the table, it is quite convenient using the fine-tuning knob extender. I usually don't have to look below, just feel the large handle. Bit changes can be made without removing the router from the table. I manufactured some 250' of hard maple handrailing and it never even got it's heart rate up.

An unforseen operation prompted me to remove it from the table for some plunge use. I was extremely pleased at how easily it converted from mounted to freehand use, and equally impressed with the plunge operation. Very clean, very smooth, very well designed.
Though I sometimes balk about price, I usually end up getting the top of the line in all my tools anyway, and this product purchase was consistent with that tendency... except I couldn't complain about the Amazon price.

First, the customer service from Amazon was great!! When I mentioned to Amazon that I did not receive my Tool Crib [$$$] catalog discount Amazon.com sent me a credit the same day!! (Something Tool Crib would not do).

Second, the router is fantastic!!! I had 2 Hitatchi's in one week that were not satisfactory, but the Bosch is everything a router should be: quiet (for a router), accurate, easy to use, and powerful. The 'soft start feature' allows the to be used as a free hand router. I did have one question about operations the Bosch customer service staff quickly emailed the solution.

Im a general contractor and a construction consultant, my men work with tools day in and day out and when it comes to good tools purchasing them is a must, the Bosch name has stood up to everything my crew can give it and it just keeps on running. The router works great and has the power even Tim Allen would take pride in. I don't believe it is for very many homeowners unless you really know what you are doing, but for craftsman its the tool for you. Enough power for the hardest piece of wood along with a shape bit and you have it made.
