From the Manufacturer

Bosch GLM 80

265-Ft Lithium-Ion Laser Measure

Bosch’s GLM 80 Laser Distance and Angle Measure is the advanced technological answer to making simple yet accurate measurements. With several measurement modes and features that make it both compact and user friendly, the GLM 80 makes it easier than ever to calculate distance, area, volume, or angles quickly and with precision.

Bosch maximizes versatility with the GLM 80, which is equipped to operate in multiple measurement modes depending on user needs. Indirect length measurement mode provides users the ability to determine inaccessible distances that are obstructed by objects or that lack a reflecting surface by applying the Pythagorean theorem. The minimum/maximum measurement mode comes in handy when evaluating the shortest and longest distances from a fixed point, making it ideal for use when measuring plumb lines (minimum) and diagonals (maximum). Its multi-surface area mode determines the total area of numerous separate surfaces with a shared length or height. Includes one-year warranty and an additional one-year warranty when registered at Bosch's website.

What's Included: GLM 80 Laser Measure, Lithium-ion Battery, Charger, Belt Pouch, and User Manual

Built-In Tilt Sensor

The GLM 80’s built-in tilt sensor adds another dimension of accuracy by calculating 360 angles in two-axes, meaning that it works accurately both horizontally and vertically. And between the tilt-screen technology (the display turns when the GLM 80 is turned more than 75 degrees and is also legible upside down) and the large backlit four-dot matrix screen, the GLM 80 provides optimal viewing in all directions.

Functions & Features

It automatically stores the last 20 measurements (both distance and angle) in its memory, including the individual measurements that add up to the result and the combinations thereof. And if one particular assessment needs to be permanently stored, users have the option to save it as a constant. Rechargeable via a standard micro-USB port, the integrated lithium-ion battery allows users to make up to 25,000 measurements per single charge.

User-Friendly Design

The GLM 80’s ergonomic design features four flat surfaces for the most comfortable fit in pockets or work belts, and its integrated lithium-ion battery makes its profile even more compact. Its tough design makes it drop-resistant up to three feet, and it’s protected against dust and water (IP 54).

They are all very accurate and easy to use.

My experience has been that Bosch makes superior products and from what I have experienced so far, the GLM80 definitely lives up to the Bosch name.

I needed a tool that can take readings quickly and accurately (no need for a second person to hold the tape when measuring longer distances).

After doing some extensive research on various laser measuring devices, the Bosch GLM80 filtered to the top of my list. It had great max distance capabilites (265ft), accuracy, and was competitively priced, but also had angle measurements that most other devices did not have. The biggest benefit to the angle measurement was it could be used to automatically calculate indirect hieghts and distances. By inderecnt, I mean you could obtain a wall height without actually being at the base of the wall. You could be standing 30ft out from the wall base, shoot up to the top of the wall at and angle, and the device would automatically calculate the height of the wall given the angle you shot at plus the distance (length) of the hypotenuse of the triangle you just formed. Pretty awesome feature, but does depend on the floor and the wall being perpendicular to each other. The double angle measurement feature is nice as well. You can measure the height of a wall opening, such as a window, even if you can't reach the opening. You can beam it, at an angle, at the top and bottom of the opening and it will automatically calculate the height of the opening for you. A steady hand, or tripod, is needed if you want really accurate measurements though.

The only questions I could not seem to find answers to before buying this unit were the type of units in would display length and angle measurements in. The manual never really talks about the options and seemed to only describe/show decimal feet or meters for length measurements and degrees for angle measurements. I was looking for a device that would display length measurements in Feet+Inches+FractionalInches and angle measurements in various formats.

I just purchased the GLM80 from Amazon and find it very convenient quite accurate and precise.

To test the precision, i.e. how consistent the readings are, I measured the distance between two walls ten times. I got readings between 30 feet, 5 7/16 inches and 30 feet, 5 19/32. That's a range of 5/32, or just over 1/8 inch.

To test the accuracy, I used a steel tape that I left overnight in the room so it was at the same temperature as the room being measured (approximately 70 degrees F) and measured 30 feet, 5 5/8 inches.

I would say both the accuracy and precision of the GLM80 is just as good as the steel tape(although I did not take ten readings with the steel tape.)

In my judgment, based on this one experiment, the GLM80 is just as accurate and precise as the steel tape. When one trades off the convenience of the GLM80 to the steel tape, overall, the GLM80 wins.

One downside is it is one needs to spend time to study the manual as the controls are not intuitive. On the other hand, this device has many other features that I did not test, so one cannot expect to take it out of the box and use all the features just by experimentation. I really don't think something this complex can be designed to be able to use it without some tutorial.

The GLM80 can be set to measure in decimal inches, inches, feet/inches, decimal feet, decimal yards, decimal millimeters, decimal centimeters, and decimal meters. When measuring in inches and feet/inches it shows the inches as whole inches and fractions, 1/32 being the smallest increment. When measuring in decimal inches the smallest increment is .01 inch. When measuring in metric the smallest increment is 0.1 mm.

I bought my GLM80 about a year ago, and have used it quite a bit for a few different jobs where a 300' reel tape just wasn't practical, like over uneven terrain. For distances greater than about 100 feet, the laser spot is pretty hard to see in bright sunlight, but I'm sure that's true regardless of the brand or model of this type of laser distance measure. I have done a few things to mitigate those problems. Of course, waiting until the pre-dusk hour works great. The Bosch enhanced laser target is also an improvement. For long distance, I also made a hybrid target out of plywood, with the Bosch target in the middle, and highly reflective, 2 inch tape on either side of it. When the laser hits the tape, you can see it clear as day it's so bright. I just use the tape to help guide the laser to the Bosch target in the center as I scan the laser side to side.

The accuracy is amazing. Before I trusted it, I compared the measurements to the 300' tape on a flat driveway. I made comparisons between the two at a bunch of distances between 5 and 150 feet. In all cases the measurements agreed within my ability to resolve the lines on the tape. I would say that their +/- 1.5mm accuracy specification is conservative.

My main user-interface gripe is that many of the settings are not sticky, like the reference point. Every time the unit shuts off, you have to reset the reference point, as well as the laser-on behavior, if you don't want the default values. The default reference is the back edge of the unit. Since I was almost always using it on a tripod, I wanted the tripod mount to be the reference. I made several incorrect readings because the reference had regressed to the back edge, without me noticing it, and caused an error of about 3 inches.
