Amazon.com Review

If you're having trouble finding a cordless combo kit that packs enough punch at an affordable price, give this 24-volt arsenal from Bosch a try. With a maximum torque rating of 500 inch-pounds, the cordless drill is among the toughest available. That kind of torque necessitates the included removable side handle and is likely to make the user thankful for the cushion grip. While it offers only 16 clutch settings--a small number compared to the 18 to 24 settings on competing drills--this heavy-duty tool is really intended as more drill than driver, and in most applications we can imagine, 16 settings is plenty. The keyless chuck has a grip tough enough to match the motor's high torque and can hold the big bits you'll want to use with this drill.

The blade-left, 24-volt circular saw offers as much power and cut capacity as you could ask for in a cordless saw. It can easily cut regular 1-1/2-inch-thick material at a full 50-degree bevel, and the bevel mechanism has a positive stop at 45 degrees. The saw also features tool-free, rear-pivot depth-of-cut adjustments and tool-free bevel adjustments. The wrench for blade changes stores in a clip right on the base. The rear battery configuration on this saw allowed Bosch to give the tool good, even balance while maintaining a nice low profile.

Powered by one of Bosch's 24-volt batteries, the flashlight included in this kit might well be called a spotlight. It offers all the illumination you need, and has a two-position pivoting head and an adjustable focus. The batteries on Bosch's 24-volt tools are 2 amp hr ni-cads, made for Bosch by Panasonic. While we really like the padded grips Bosch uses on its cordless tools, the 24-volt battery does add a little extra heft to these tools, and no matter how nice the grip is, you will notice the extra weight if you carry this in your hand all day. This kit is ideal for contractors and other professionals looking for heavy-duty tools at a great price.

The full kit includes the 1/2-inch drill, a 6-1/2-inch circular saw, the flashlight, two 24-volt batteries, a one-hour charger, a side handle for the drill, and a case that holds it all. --Brian Trinen

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, January 4, 2000
This review is from: Bosch 3960CFK 24 Volt Drill/Circular Saw/Flashlight Combo Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
Now I am a huge Makita fan. I always will be. I am sooo happy with my 18v combo kits. I thought all was well. Then I saw the 24v drill at a local home improvement center. I thought,"@#$%&! when will it ever end?." At that point I was able to resist. Then the combo kit came out. After checking them out closer,I knew there was at least one in my future. I was a little skeptical at first, thinking that my wrist might just give out. Well it hasn't yet. The drill is a real beauty. I don't think you can beat the TEE handle design everybody uses today. It really has a nice balance . The Bosch has a more balanced ,lighter feel than the Dewalt 24v drill. It's also much more compact.(I've had much better success in the past with Bosch cordless than the big yellow also)I haven't taken the time to measure the actual torque of this bad boy, but I have no reason to doubt Bosch's rating of over 500 inch pounds. It has plenty of power to do anything you want it too. Runtime is the longest I have ever seen. The light is quite bright . I found it a little less useful than the makita. The switch isn't as conveniently located. You can't aim it down when it's standing on the battery.(like when you are cutting in the dark and need the light concentrated on your work) You can however focus the beam somewhat by rotating the lens. I'm not sure yet how effective this actually is. The saw is simply outstanding. If my Makita's cut 2x4's like butter, The Bosch cuts them like melted butter. Unbeleivable! An included rip fence, magnesium base, all ball bearing construction, and a very effective blade brake are icing on the cake. You'll also appreciate being able to hook up your shop-vac to the saw for clean cutting inside finished buildings. Only one minor quibble. The safety release for the trigger on the Bosch is a little awkward. You have to push it in from the side. To do so you have to change your grip on the saw . The Makita has one on the top of the handle where you can easily push it with your thumb. That aside I highly recommend the combo kit from Bosch. I can't wait for the recip saw! Buy one you won't regret it . If $469.00 is too much, try the Makita. Either way, you'll say WOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars Contractor grades this tool A+++, December 5, 2000

This review is from: Bosch 3960CFK 24 Volt Drill/Circular Saw/Flashlight Combo Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
Bosch has really done it this time. I used to own a Dewalt 18v system but my truck was stolen with all the tools so was forced (darn) to buy some new tools. I wanted the 24 volt system since I was starting fresh, but the big yellow system didn't come in kits at the time but Bosch did and at a price I could afford. Well no sooner did I open up the case that I fell in love with these tools. Yes there are some cons to them. The case is huge and won't fit in my utility bed boxes. The saws blade guard could be improved for better plunge cuts and thin cuts. The blade storage, inside the case, isn't threaded so blades always go all over the place. Now for the good stuff. Power, Power, Power. I have not been able to stall the drill yet on a fresh charge. The saw will stall but it has the most power of any cordless saw I've tried. I can cut the rafter tails on a new house with one charge. Its great for pickup work and in remote areas where you just need a few cuts and no power is available. Mind you, you can't build a whole house with this and stay on budget but you sure could have fun trying. Believe me, I am the envy of every job site when I pull out that saw. I use the drill every day and can attest you won't go wrong with this. !!Notice!! you can still get the free cordless recip saw with the sales receipt, upc from the box and the voucher from Bosch until the end of the year 2000. Just call their 800 number imprinted on the inside of the plastic case.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Winner in all respects, June 19, 2000
By

This review is from: Bosch 3960CFK 24 Volt Drill/Circular Saw/Flashlight Combo Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I'm a huge Makita fan, and up until last week I thought they made the best cordless circ saw, and drill on the market. Until I met the Bosch 24 Volt line. Now don't get me wrong, I didn't just jump on the band-wagon because of 24 Volts. No, I'm a contractor so I bought the saw and drill to put them through the torture test and heres what I found:

Con: drill is bulky. Pro: More than makes up all it's faults in raw power [500 in/lbs of torque, thats about 40 foot-pounds of torque].

Con: open air vents on both saw and drill can be a gateway for water to enter the tool, meaning, uh-oh I just shorted my drill out! Pro: single sleeve industrial chuck on drill.

Con: bulky battery pack. Pro: battery is 2.5 Amp Hours, the best by makita is 2.2, and De-Walt is about 1.7, I dont even want to say what Milwaukee's is!

Con: to me, the plastic blade gaurd on the saw feels chintzy. Pro: That's one powerful saw, I cut 200 2X4's on one charge!

Con: handle on drill is not positionable, this is bad and heres why. My buddy borrowed my drill and was using it to drill in between studs, the handle does not rotate so the drill could not fit up in there. He was using a 2" ship auger hit a deck screw in the wood, the drill twisted and snapped his wirst all because the handle couldn't rotate down. Pro: tellin your friends this story.

That's about all the Cons I could think of so here are all the other Pros: Drill has the industries largest metal planetary gearing, saw has the industries largest motor, both tools are industrial quality and have a one year no quivle gaurantee.

Overall I would defineatly take the bosch anyday over any other company especially because for usually a measley 40 bucks more u can step up to 24 Volt power.

~Have fun and do yourself a favor, don't break your wrist.
