I have owned this drill for over a year. The only quality I saw was power but for crying out loud who needs this much power. problems: 1. The battery is a bit difficult to remove from the drill. 2. the cluch keeps moving from high to low torque, first I thought I was moving it, it moves under load. 3. one of the battery decided to give prematurely. 4. Can you believe...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the best, November 11, 2000
This review is from: Bosch 3960K-CC 24 Volt 1/2-Inch Drill/Driver Kit includes Clic-change Quick-change Bit System (Tools & Home Improvement)
At first I resisted buying a 24v drill. I thought it was overkill. I was wrong . So I bought one last December. The longer I have these drills , the more I like them.(I recently bought another) Torque ? Runtime ? This bad boy delivers in spades . But it's not a brute either. It runs so smoothly and quietly. Very different from the Porter Cable 19.2s I had for awhile. It is very well balanced and comfortable to use. Absolutely the best 24v drill on the market. It was recently top rated in consumer reports.Which may mean absolutely NOTHING . But it's reassuring to some , myself included. I can't beleive how huge , awkward and heavy the 24s from Dewalt and craftsman are. They offer no advantage over the Bosch except they will build more muscle mass if you lift them repeatedly. The new Makita's look promising but they are over priced at this point and they offer less torque and lower 1.7 AH ratings on the batteries . The Bosch is a tool you could actually use all day. Yes ,it's much heavier than the 14.4s and a tad more than the 18s . But in the trade off you get tons of power. It does more work faster for longer periods of time before it needs a fresh battery. It's very clear that Bosch did all their Homework on these tools before they brought them to market.I hope they expand the 24v line-up .

5.0 out of 5 stars 3960K-CC Excellent choice, June 24, 2000

I have just recently purchased the 3960K 24-Volt 1/2" Drill/Driver Kit. This was my first high performance cordless purchase. It didn't take long for the drill to show it's true power. My father-in-law bought the Panasonic EYC132 15.6 Volt Cordless Performance Package Metal Combo Kit. We used both drills side-by-side to put up Hardie Panel siding on my house. My father-in-law had to charge his batteries twice during the job, while the original battery that I used is still in my drill. The power did not decrease one bit. I'm going to hold off on charging it to see just how much longer it can hold out. We'll be finishing the siding this coming weekend.

The only problem that I had was that the adjustable clutch moved sometimes, while I was drilling. I couldn't tell if this was caused by my hand moving it, as I supported the drill or if this was a problem with the clutch itself.

Regardless, I feel that the drill was an excellent investment. I have recently purchased the Bosch 24V Saw over the internet and can't wait to see how it performs. All of the ratings show that it's the best by far. Hopefully my expectations will be met.

I have a Bosch 3310 12.0 Volt cordless drill that my wife got me for anniversary several years ago. I previously had a Black/Decker which I complained about constantly. So my wife went to the local tool shop and asked the guy for the best drill he had; without hesitation he sold her the Bosch 3310. Incidently I gave away the Black/Decker to a friend's son, he is kinda goofy anyway so he wouldn't know the difference. We we recently moved to the Piney Woods of East Texas on a 10 acre mini-farm. Well now I needed another drill a bit more powerfull than my old standby 3310. So I go to CU Novenber issue and bingo the DeWalt jumps out as best 18 volt. Well I got onto Amazon.com bought the thing, a DW995K-2. Well I am here to say quality is very important these days. I used the DeWalt one day, packed it up, returned it to Amazon for a refund. Immediately turned around the next day and ordered the Bosch 3960K-CC 24 volt. Now I have two quality drills and will never buy another brand. You see the DeWalt just couldn't measure up to the Bosch. But my advice is: if someone has never owned a Bosch get em the DeWalt they might never find out the difference and save a buck while they are at it. You get what you pay for in power tools.

4.0 out of 5 stars More drill than I need?, October 23, 2001

If maximum power is a priority, this drill is absolutely your best choice. But, do you need this much drill? Although the Bosch has monster power, is well designed, and is lighter than what you'd expect from a 24 volt, it's still a handful. Its slightly larger size also makes it more difficult to fit in those awkward spots. Don't get me wrong, I purchased this drill and happily use it. But if I had to decide again, I might have given a less powerful but smaller and more comfortable Makita stronger consideration. The bottom line for me is be realistic about how much power you really need.

If you're looking at a cordless drill to do whatever you need it to do, you've just found it. This drill has unbelievable power at 500 in/lbs of torque, plenty of run time, is very well balanced, and for it's size isn't all that heavy. I've had mine over 2 years and it has held up well. It's a great value with 2 batteries and a one hour charger. If you're looking at a heavy duty cordless drill or can't decide between this and other 24 volt drills out there, this is THE one to get

Can you believe how much it costs to replace one battery, find out. 5. Who needs to walk around with this much weight to drill. Nothing is perfect in this world, I would say and 18 makita is all any one would ever need. I am a General Contractor. I have and used every tool out there. I had say the 18 volt makita is the right choice and easier to find replacing batteries and the like at a reasonable price, comparing to all other drills, weight, cost, reliability, manuverability, and replacement battery.

I have owned this drill for about 6 months now and the chuck head has broken off twice already. It does not withstand even the smallest impact on the head of the tool. I dropped the tool from waist height once and it literally sheared at the clutch adjustment. The second time it broke was at the same point while drilling a hole with a 1 1/8 bit in a 2x4. If you intend on using this tool on the job, it will not last with normal use.

This drill has great power, however, the chuck assembly is attached with a small plastic ring. It will break in a 3 foot fall. My drill has broken twice in 6 months. To their credit, Bosch has repaired it free. I wish they would upgrade it to a more rugged model.

As just a homeowner who likes to build things, I was afraid that this drill would be overkill for my needs. I was wrong. Having all that power is just wonderful, but I also realized a benefit I didn't expect. With that much power, you can put screws etc in at a slow rate of speed. There's no need to jack up the RPM's only to have the bit slip off. This gives an excellent amount of control. It's a bit heavy, but well balanced and comfortable to use. Once you use one, you'll never go back!
