4.0 out of 5 stars Contractor, February 4, 2010
This review is from: Bosch CPK40-36 36-Volt Combo Kit with 2 XL Batteries, 4-Piece (Tools & Home Improvement)
I'm a contractor. I have both the Bosch 36 volt 4 tool kit and the Milwaukee V28 volt 4 tool kit. Both are good kits. The Bosch saws have rafter hooks on them which are very handy. The V28 has more power and the batteries last longer per charge. I'm not saying the Bosch is weak. Bosch 36 Volt is the 2nd most powerfull cordless tool I've used. American Bosch tools have a 2.0 amphour rating. Bosch gave their Europe versions 2.6 amphours. Way to go Bosch!! The V28 batteries are 3.0 amp hours. The Bosch saws will stall out if you strain them too much. They do this to protect the battery. It's slightly annoying when 32 feet up on a ladder but otherwise a good feature. The V28 does not have this feature and my batteries have held well up under heavy use for over 4 years. The V28 drill can get hot when screwing off a large deck mid-summer. The V28 drill has a metal chuck. The Bosch 36 Volt has a metal chuck with a plastic sleeve. When drilling in tight places the chuck may rub creating sharp grooves in the chuck which will cut your hand (can be sanded to remove them). Both chucks grip bits well. The V28 drill is well balanced. The Bosch 36 v drill is a little akward when holding it but not to bad. The Bosch 36 Volt drill does not stand up well when placed on a floor as the battery has a small flat bottom. The V28 circular saw has a metal guide. The Bosch circular saw has a heavy duty plastic guide which may not be as heavy duty if dropped. The Bosch circular saw guide does work better when cutting a 45 degree bevel cut. The V28 circular saw guide gets hung up and doesn't open easily when cutting a 45 degree bevel (you have to open the guide with your hand but most saws operate like this). The V28 circular saw comes with the rip guide and it has numbers on it. The Bosch circular saw does not come with a rip guide, (which was difficult to purchase as nobody carries it), and it does not have numbers on it. Both sawzalls work well. Bosch has a slightly better blade holder but the V28 blade holder still works well. Bottom line is purchase whichever tool or kit is cheaper as they both are good tools and have good a warranty.

UPDATE
I've been using this Bosch kit for about 10 months now. The Bosch drill has held up well. The Bosch sawzall has held up well. The Bosch batteries have held up well (one of the fuel gauges doesnt work, but that doesnt affect battery performance and is probably a random issue). The Bosch circular saw has not held up well. The plastic blade guard on the circular saw is not strong enough. Bosch needs to make the guard out of metal. It has broken once and will probably break again. I use these tools every week and I feel like I have to be careful when I place the saw on the ground when I'm done using it. When I use the Milwaukee V28 circular saw I don't need to worry about carefully placing the saw down as its very durable. However the worst feature of the Bosch circular saw is the bearing used on the motor shaft. It is a very noisy bearing. I suspect its not even a bearing. It may be a sleeve. The saw has been replace 3 times beacause of a lot of play on the motor shaft. When the guard broke on the 3rd saw, the 4th saw had the same loose bearing. This causes the blade to make a weird noise when running. The blade can wiggle back and forth or side to side too which causes slightly inaccurate cuts. With the battery removed you can wiggle the blade side to side. The bearing gets worse over time. I have little faith this saw will last as long as my Milwaukee V28 kit has. Overall I prefir the Milwaukee V28 kit as its better in every way. The Milwauke V28 kit is more durable, has more power, and the batteries last slightly longer. This Bosch kit is still my 2nd favorite of all my cordless tools.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet set., February 9, 2011

This review is from: Bosch CPK40-36 36-Volt Combo Kit with 2 XL Batteries, 4-Piece (Tools & Home Improvement)
Other than a 16 gau nailer and a makita impact/ drill combo, this is my first cordless tool set to own. I've had it for 2 months. They are awesome! I used the the sawzy to demo the framing for a foundation replacement, and the circ to hang the siding. The sawzy shakes violently and with a 12 inch milwaukee axe blade it is devastating. More power than my corded dewalt. Blade lock requires a bit of push and pull jiggle to seat, but I like it overall. The circular saw is so convenient to tote around, has a real strong push once I torqued down the slippy clutch a bit more. I was ripping a 4x8 to 4x6 that I salvaged (read rock hard) after I had already hit a few nails in demo and my framer was surprised to say the least. I don't mind the cheapo blade guard, but the trigger safety annoys everybody and the plastic depth lever twists and vibrates loose which is also annoying. Cuts smooth like bosch always does. The drill is a heavy sucker but it punishes the work. The flashlight has gone through 2 bulbs in two months. The second bulb only lasted 15 minutes of use, but the warranty on these tools are exceptional. Both times I have called a woman picks up immediately and handles my issue on the spot. I asked them to make a 36V impact driver that I can drive retrofit bolts with or at least simpson SDS screws. Get at least one spare battery.
7 months later: The flashlight is junk, specifically the bulbs which last until you tip it over. The drill is dead; shot metal and plastic out of the motor vents while drilling 5/32" in porcelain. The circular saw is intermittently dead, which I suspect is caused by the safety. Recip saw still works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, September 7, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bosch CPK40-36 36-Volt Combo Kit with 2 XL Batteries, 4-Piece (Tools & Home Improvement)
Great product, these have the power of corded tools. I used the circular saw to clean up a huge pile of damaged rough cut red oak planks, cutting off damaged ends and ripping the rotted parts out. All day with 1.5 charges. The saw rips 1 1/2" red oak.

The sawzall is a beast, made for heavy work. The variable speed trigger does not seem to work too well. It goes to full speed almost immediately, no fine speed control. Just keep work it front of it when you pull the trigger.

I had Bosch's 2 1/2" carbide tipped hole cutter in the drill. I hit some nail embedded plates drilling for pipe and tried swapping over to a bimetal bit several times to save the expensive carbide cutters. I tried several times but went back in with the carbide cutters, hit the nails, and it bent the wall of the hole saw. The drill will turn anything that is in the chuck. It's not a substitute for a Super Hawg, they should make a Super Hawg with this battery.
