With patented two-by-two tooth geometry, these blades have the ability to cut up to 20-percent faster through metal. They also have a variable tooth pitch of 5/8 teeth-per-inch, increasing the speed of chip removal while making smoother, more precise cuts. The teeth have also have a micro-blast treatment applied to them that preserves the sharpness of the blade and furthers the precision of the cutting edge. To increase durability, these blades have a powder metal steel alloy to resist higher temperatures as well as a titanium coating to reduce heat build-up. In addition, the body height and thickness of these blades have been increased to ensure straighter cuts with reduced vibration. Designed with a patented full cone threaded tip, drilling becomes fast and effortless for these bits. Also unique to these bits is the spur and reamer feature that allows for drilling of cleaner holes. In addition to these features, the contoured paddle design is what really sets these spade bits apart from the rest of the market. This design allows for chip removal to be reached at higher speeds than ever. With chipping speeds this high, DareDevil has added a hex shank power groove at the end of the bit to further reduce slippage during use. These bits are made in China and the metal that was used is pitted. This did not affect the performance but may be an indication of the quality of the metal that is used. The bits have screw type tips which are quite different from the tips of my Craftsman bits which have v-shaped tips without threads. I decided to compare drilling results by using the same block of wood and the same Bosch cordless drill for the same size bits. The Bosch bits tore through the wood with amazing speed but left very ragged holes. This would be suitable for drilling holes in studs for electrical wiring and other such use. The Craftsman bit was a barely noticeable length of time slower in creating the hole but the result was a clean and smooth hole. I have been using Craftsman spade bits for woodworking projects and will continue to do so. When I need to drill holes where appearance is not a factor I will use the Bosch due to their speed.

I had to cut a dozen 1 1/4" holes into 4X4s. I dulled two hole saws and asked my son to pick a spade bit while he was out. The guy at the hardware store swore these spades were the best tool he had seen in sometime. Being the skeptic I am I figured these were just another set of paddle bits. These bits cleanly and quickly drilled the dozen holes I was completely impressed. If you press into the wood the bits do grab a little but if you keep the RPMs up and allow the bit to feed in at it's own pace it cuts through wood like a hot knife through butter, very smooth with very little torque. I now agree with the guy at the hardware store; this is one of the best tools I have bought in some time.

These bits rip through studs, joists, and rafters easily. Hold on to your drill tight, especially with the larger bits. These will easily rip a drill out of your hand. I have read reviews of these not working well in cordless drills because of lack of power. Milwaukee M18, M12, and Craftsman Nextec 12v drills have no problem with the 3/4" bit on nearly dead batteries. With only 1 bar of life on my M18 hammer drill, I drilled through over 20 studs without it stopping or killing the battery. The M18 has no issue pushing the 1-1/2" bit through 2 stacked 2x4s.

I bought the 3-pack to replace 2 bent bits from this set. Even with the bent bits, they are a better value than cheaper bits that don't work as well (Irwin, Dewalt, Craftsman from my experiences).

Pros: very fast drilling and sharp.

Cons: The narrow shafts bend easily if the bit grabs. The points dull quite fast which slows them down. Once the screw pilot goes through, it take some force to finish boring the hole.

I have an electrical contracting business and we constantly fish wires in closed walls. These bits grab the wood and make short work of the hole. Their are two issues that you have to be aware of. They are agressive so your drill should be strong enough and you have to have a good grip on the drill. Second, because the drill has a tappered screw type tip it can split delicate trim boards. That said they are great. The kit also comes with in my opinion the best case I've seen. When the time comes I will definetly buy another so far the seem to be durable.

I have been using these bits now for over 6 months(August 2011) and everything I said about them still is true. They are very durable.

These things are wicked. The self-feeding head works very well, and very, very fast. There is no comparison to the traditional spade bit set i replaced. I have mostly only worked with soft woods, so I can't comment on how well they'd do on hardwood.

They do require a pretty Torque-y drill to function. I have a 19.2V Craftsman drill/driver and while you don't need to put any pressure on these due to the self feed, you do need to drill using low speed usually, as high speed doesn't generate enough torque to power through. Using an extension, I did a 3/4" end-bore clear through an 18" 2x3 without breaking a sweat.

The storage wrap they come in is pretty great too, well made and easy to get the bits in an out of, while still holding them securely and protecting the sharp (very sharp!) tips and cutting edges.

The only thing that's missing is at least a short extension, but those can be picked up pretty cheap, and the 6" fits perfectly in the fold of the wrap. Would very quickly buy this set again.

Compared to regular spade bits these will bore faster in soft wood and provide somewhat more control in making a relatively straight hole. They are better than regular spade bits without the screw tip which serves to pull the cutting edges through the wood in the same way the screw tip on a self-feed drill bit works.

Two drawbacks to this type of bit (also applies to self-feed drill bits) is one that the metal is carbon tool steel which dulls quickly in hard woods like oak or ipe or man made materials such as MDF and oriented strand board and forget about using them in Hardie board or backer board.

The other drawback is that the screw thread pitch draws the cutting blades at the same exact speed whether going into something soft like pine or fir or something very hard like oak or ironwoods. The screw tip pulls the cutting edges to quickly in hard woods and the result is a jam and kickback.

The advantage is price and having a compact kit in a case that covers a wide range of hole diameters.
