Bosch's system does away with all of that, and this kit was a pretty cost-effective way for me to get started, along with a package of Bosch CK2 Quick Change Conversion Kit to convert some of my other hole saws made by the likes of Lenox, Milwaukee, Ridgid and Vermont American.
And that's the beauty of this system: just about every hole saw I've come across at my local hardware stores will work with Bosch's system. All I need is a Bosch adapter -- each of which cost less than three bucks -- and the saw is ready to work with Bosch's mandrel and pilot bit.
Bosch even makes a SDS version of the mandrel, so my collection of hole saws can quickly be switched between regular and SDS drills.
The pilot bits are also quick-connect hex ends, and they simply pull out / click in to place, with no loosening or tightening necessary. This allows me to easily change between wood and masonry bits, depending on the task at hand.
Removing wood plugs is a cinch. If one becomes stuck, pull the collar of the mandrel to release the saw, then use the pilot bit to gently (but quickly) pop the plug out. It's way easier with the pilot bit removed.Read more ›
The quick change mandrel limits the holes depth for the smaller hole saws. This is due to the fact that the mandrel has bigger diameter than the saws and the hole depth can be as much as the saw length, not more - it simply prevents you from drilling deeper. This is quite an issue if you plan to drill the side holes (7/8"[22mm] or 1"[25mm]) when installing door locks. These holes are deeper and you need some sort of an extender or longer adapter to be able to drill them with these saws (not sure if BOSCH has such thing, if somebody knows, please tell). Some may say that you shall not drill a deeper hole than the saw anyway. But buy removing the cut-out core you can go deeper. Well, with the smaller than the mandrel hole saws in this set you can't.
TIP: Hold the saw when you release it from the mandrel, otherwise the spring can launch it and when dropped on a hard floor the saw can brake a tooth or you can chip a tile (and no, this didn't happen to me :).
Otherwise these hole saws are quality made, nicely boxed and can serve you a long time if properly cared after. These are primarily for metal drilling and if used on any type of wood, plywood, MDF, etc. be careful not to preheat them - they can be easily burned and damaged.
the plug removal from the saw a lot faster.
The case is not the worst but not as well done as the Milwaukee cases. There is an extra compartment for extra drill bits which is helpful and better than having them rattling around in the case. It is not as strong as the cases for the Milwaukee and Blue Boar kits we have and not likely to survive a fall on concrete.
The kit is also limited on the largest size hole saw that it will hold. If you want a larger hole saw or want to add a couple sizes of carbide grit or diamond hole saws there is no space.
For the DIY homeowner wanting to have a variety of sizes at minimal cost and where the number of holes needed is very small and the 3-5 minutes to get the cut plug out is not a problem, this kit is worth considering. It costs about 50 cents to manufacture a bi-metal hole saw and they all use high speed steel so no benefits to buying any well made bi-metal hole saw, only to avoid the poorly made ones with a large weld seam on the side.
Personally I would instead buy a quality TCT large teeth hole cutter set and add one or two bi-metal for metal and carbide grit for wall tile on an as needed basis.
Blue Boar Master Combo Kit-11 Sizes MEGA Nail Tough Deep Cutting Tungsten Carbide Hole Saws. Cut 10x Faster, 3x Larger, 40x more holes using cordless drills. Ideal for wood, MDF, Particle board, Hardie board. Deep slots for fast plug removal

Horrible in that most of the blades are off center and therefore unusable. Unfortunately for me I didn't realize this was the case until after the 30 day return policy. Read morePublished 8 days ago by James
