I also feel like I have better control while cutting with a barrel grip as opposed to the top handle.

Most of those were metal blades, so were being worked very hard.

I've owned a barrel grip Black and Decker (a good one that was still black and made in USA) that finally wore out and I knew I wanted another barrel grip jigsaw. I also knew, having used a Bosch top handle several years ago, that I wanted a Bosch jigsaw. This one was exactly what I wanted.

The Bosch barrel grip can be used for the lightest duty work but given its size and heft this is intended for the kind of heavy duty commercial work I use it for. Fast, Smooth and Powerful sums it up well. Ripping through wood is effortless. I believe this will be the last jigsaw I ever buy.

I should add a note of caution to small handed people. The size of the barrel is pretty big compared to my old Black and Decker. The average adult male will have no problem grasping the barrel. But men with small hands, woman and juveniles may find it to be less ergonomic than the top handle. I prefer the barrel grip because of the compact height and the angle I'm able to hold it at is more comfortable than a top handle. I also feel like I have better control while cutting with a barrel grip as opposed to the top handle.

Comes with a nice hard plastic case and one wood cutting blade. Interior of the case has a place to store blades so they aren't on the loose.

I purchased this based on the rave reviews that the previous iteration received (Bosch 1590EVSK 6.4 Amp Top Handle Jigsaw) and it did not disappoint. So far, my experience has been one of low vibration with beautiful, clean cuts. Other people have mentioned noise, but I don't feel like it's that loud. The only part of the saw I'm unhappy about is the angle selecting mechanism on the base. There are next to no markings. It'd hard to be sure you've locked it into a vertical position or 45 degree angle. I ended up using a square to be sure that it was set correctly. I don't intend on using this to do precision 45 degree cuts, so it only looses a star.

Otherwise, it's a well made saw.

I have owned the last three models of the Bosch barrel handle jigsaw. Each new version seems to be better than the last. The latest version has been bumped up to 7.0 amp which is noticeably more powerful than the earlier version. I don't have a single problem, even the case has a blade compartment. I was cutting through two stacked 3/4 pieces of ply and the js47oeb blew right through it with very little vibration. It was a pleasure to use

For reference, this is my third Bosch saber saw. I bought my first one over twenty years ago. Before it, I bought "high end" B &D's and others touted as professional quality. They all died within six months of heavy use. In contrast, I sold my first Bosch to my brother seven years after I bought it, when I upgraded [to the first model not requiring a screw driver for blade changes].

My first Bosch was a barrel and was bought by mistake. I had never used one before. A friend picked it up for me, since I was hours from civilization. However, I came to like the barrel design so much, my second Bosch purchase was what might be called a ironic mistake. The same friend picked it up all those years later, but bought the D handle type that time. I tried it, but had to have a barrel again. I gifted the D handled saw to a friend headed north, to Alaska, where it yet resides, and bought this barrel version and really like its features.

Blades just press in, but hold well. Equally impressive is, they eject at the flip of a lever. Switching the angle of cut is also a breeze. Before, I had to locate and use an Allen wrench. With this version, you merely flip a lever, making for quick, almost effortless cut angle changes.

Additional to the foregoing and as others mentioned, the saw is variable speed (the barrel speed is controlled by a dial), has a chip blower, has a bearing back up for the blade for more accurate cuts, and has three orbit settings that allow you to choose smooth or fast cutting (extreme orbit allows quicker chip removal and quick cuts).

Since going to the Bosch and its bayonet blade system, which all other quality saws have copied, I have only broken about ten blades in over twenty years.

I'll preface by stating I don't use jigsaws very often, and purchased this mostly because I do not yet have a band saw. I used to use an OLD Black&Decker saw, one with an all metal housing - that's how old. Very underpowered and not at all precise. This tool is the complete opposite. It's actually very large, the size and weight a bit daunting at first. However, not at all a drawback because controlling it is no problem. The variable speed is great, and a very handy feature. The variable oscillation control is just as nice. They can be varied separately which is all the better. Also, the dust blower can be turned off so that's nice too. The cord is quite long, which minimizes the need for extension cords - always a good thing. Blade changes are great, no tools needed. However, you must make sure the blade is fully seated in the chuck. The quick release shoots the blades out, so take care to release the blade where you want it to go.

As other reviewers have noted, the blade does cant forward about 1/16" and a bit more with a Progressor blade installed. Personally, I don't mind this as I don't consider jigsaws precision tools. For what I use this saw for, which is making templates and installing things, the blade canting forward isn't an issue. For precision cuts I'd use a band saw, but because I don't have that yet, I use a jigsaw and clean up with other tools.

The anti-mar sole plate goes on easily and is a nice feature. Haven't used the anti splinter insert but it looks like it'd work just fine. The tool is a little loud, but that's a result of the very powerful motor, which has NO trouble chewing through two inch thick, extremely hard woods. I haven't used it to cut metal yet, but with good blades and reasonable feed rates I have no doubt it'd do a fine job.
