Best Blade Grinder,
By A Customer
This review is from: Bosch MKM 6000 UC Coffee Grinder, White (Kitchen)
I am glad to see this grinder back on the market after a few years absence. Mine is the Starbucks' brand, but it is a Bosch. Unfortunately, Starbucks switched to the Capresso grinder, so I had a hard time finding the Bosch until recently. I have had other blade grinders, but none as consistant as the Bosch. It is not a match for a good burr grinder, but for [the money] what do you expect? As with any blade grinder, one must experiment to get the preferred grind. The Bosch has a unique slanted grind chamber that keeps the beans in the path of the blades. It is well made and reliable. I have had mine over twelve years ... no problems whatsoever. Unless you need a burr grinder for espresso or you are such a perfectionist that you won't settle for anything else, I highly recommend the Bosch blade grinder.

Not just for coffee anymore,

For anyone looking for an easier way to do things, here's a good one. I purchased this based on the product reviews (especially the one with the Starbuck's reference) but, instead of coffee, I grind spices. I got the idea from Alton Brown on the Food Network. The unit is great because the blades sit in an angled metal bowl, which means the items inside get pulverized very quickly. The lid fits well, and the motor is much quieter than other coffee grinders I've found. At the price, I'll get another one for coffee. No more mortar and pestle for me!

What an excellent little grinder. It is solidly constructed and the powerful motor and slanted chamber grind the coffee beans very consistantly. Who needs an expensive burr grinder when you can use this little bosch grinder. I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and use it every morning. Now I,m spoiled. No more instant coffee for me!

I went with a Bosch grinder based on my experience with Bosch products in the automotive industry. Their magnetic drive electric water pumps are one of the best auxiliary pumps you can find and in general their products that rely on motors/electronics are dependable. This grinder has a slanted reservoir plate so that the beans rattle around as they get hit by the grinder blades. What this means is that 3 oz of hard beans become pulverized into dust within a few seconds. What makes this grinder better than the rest is the fact it's QUIET. The only thing making more noise than the motor is the sound of the beans rattling around right before they're ground. The safety mechanism is quite reliable. In order to activate the grinder, you hold down the black button built into the lid. If the lid isn't on the machine, the chances of you accidentally turning it on and cutting off a finger or two are significantly reduced, if not eliminated. Overall I give this grinder 5 stars and I highly recommend going with this unit if you do not have a grinder already, OR if you wish to upgrade to a better unit.

Grinds fast but not thoroughly,

This grinder grinds very quickly, possibly due to the slanted bottom surface. However, I have found that it is difficult to get the beans evenly ground. If I grind for a short time most of the grind consistency is just right, but somehow I always end up with a few beans that have gone untouched. If I grind a little bit longer, the beans get too powdery and this does not make good coffee. Also is somewhat small on capacity and as someone else said, the lid does not fit tight at all. One additional minor point - the cord does not have any strain relief. I would guess that after a year or two of wrapping and unwrapping it around the grinder, it will begin to crack where it goes into the base of the grinder.

Great Grinder,

This is the best coffee grinder I've ever owned. Mine's been in a box for several years because someone gave us a K**** grinder for Christmas, and we were using it because it was a gift. We just moved, and couldn't find the other grinder, but found the Bosch. I couldn't believe how quiet and fast it was compared to the other grinder. A night and day difference. Those who complain that it doesn't grind evenly probably haven't tried pulsing the grinder while grinding (or giving it a quick shake part way through the process). It works great.
By the way, where is everyone getting this "$24.99" list price? Every site I've looked at has it listed at 25 bucks. According to Bosch's own website (boschappliancesdotcom), the SRP is $19.99. You save $0.00.

I was shopping for a new coffee grinder because of my frustration with my old one (a toastmaster). The old one leaves grinds all over, has too small a lid (which frequently sticks). I thought this was a small amount to spend to start the day better. Because it had a 5 star rating, I bought this grinder instead of the one I had planned on getting- the krups. I think I made a bad decision. I KNOW the Krups would have solved those problems.
What the other folks have said is true- it does make a nice even grind...but, there are other areas in which it does not excel. Instead of doing away with my other frustrations, this created new ones. The day after I opened the box, I started my day by vacuuming. The lid doesn't lock or even fit tight. If you hit the button wrong, the lid comes off sending grinds flying everywhere! In addition, while it may not be possible (technically) to operate without the lid, if it comes off, the blade continues to spin for a minute or two, so, you could very easily cut yourself. I don't know of any other grinder where this is even a remote possibility. In addition, the lid holds, perhaps, half an ounce making it very impractical as a coffee grinder, though I can see that it might be Ok for spices if you only want a small amount. I would recommend either the Braun or Krups over this machine. I wish someone had said these things before I bought this... I really don't need a third grinder.

An excellent grinder,

I have had this for four years now and it works great! When a coffee fanatics told me that he didn't like blade grinders, I tried a burr grinder but found the grind quality and taste indistinguishable from my Bosch grinder. This model is well built and designed. Highly recommended!

I bought this Bosch Coffee Grinder to use primarily for grinding spices; I frequently have read in food/cooking magazines (e.g., Cook's Illustrated) that coffee grinders can be used for this purpose. The grinder works fairly well, and the spices were macerated pretty quickly. However, two problems became readily apparent.
First, you cannot remove the inner tray and blades or even get them wet. The directions suggest occasionally wiping them clean with a dry cloth. Unfortunately, this process does not clean it very thoroughly or get rid of any lingering scent. Even if you only use the grinder for coffee, I assume that you'd want to clean it thoroughly to prevent different varieties of coffees from contaminating each other. Second, it leaks! I ended up with my kitchen counter covered with a fine dusting of spices, even when I pushed on the lid to help make it tighter. It is possible that these two problems are not an issue for grinding coffee, and the grinder did admittedly crush the spices pretty well. However, I'm very disappointed with this purchase, and it seems as though quite a few other reviewers have been as well. Not recommended.

This is our first Coffee Grinder and did not know much about them except what feedback other's have wrote here. We decided on this Bosch Unit. This grinder simply rocks !! Very simple operation, just remove the lid, add the beans and place the lid back on it and depress the small button and away it goes, we have been grinding our beans very fine and we have it down to a science, we add just enough beans to use for 10 cups of Kona Coffee, and when it is done, just wipe it clean, that simple. This unit is built well, the blades appear very solid and not cheaply made. Would I recommend this Coffee Grinder, YES ! I do not think you can find a better built unit that is priced right .....
