5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Machine, July 31, 2007
This review is from: 450W Compact Kitchen Machine (Kitchen)
I bought this machine on recommendation from a friend who has the industrial size one. I have been baking bread for many years, by machine and by hand and this one tops them all. I use up to 9 cups of bread flour, making 3 loafs of bread at a time and it holds up wonderfully.I've only used the blender twice and its been great too. Still not tried out the other assessories as yet, but hoping to soon. Baking bread is what I do every two to three days, so this way it saves my hands. Normal bread machines do not hold up when you bake bread every day. I would highly recommend it, it is worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glad I got it, January 11, 2008
This review is from: 450W Compact Kitchen Machine (Kitchen)
Everything about this mixer is good: the attachments, the size, the power, the style, the ease of cleaning, the quietness. It only weighs 11 pounds -- it's practically portable. It makes wonderful breads & pizza dough.

What I especially like about it is that it doesn't overmix. The speed control lets you use a light touch. I can cut in fats for pie dough or biscuits and get light & flaky results. Cakes don't come out tough & dry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Six Stars, July 1, 2011
This review is from: 450W Compact Kitchen Machine (Kitchen)
Bosch no longer manufactures this particular incarnation--the MUM 4750 UC/3 Kitchen Machine--of its Compact mixer series; this one is a 450 W (compared to the current 400 W) model and it comes with a stainless steel, rather than plastic, bowl and a caddy for the slicer/shredder; I believe the caddy has, unfortunately, been discontinued and is no longer included with the newer Compacts. Bear in mind that it's entirely likely that the 400 W models perform exactly the same as this one.

Pretty much all of the Bosch Compacts are now bundled with the slicer/shredder and the blender (which I'd take more seriously if it were glass). To tell you the truth, the likelihood that I'll ever use either of these attachments is nil; I use my Health Craft Kitchen Machine Food Processor (manual, fast, ridiculously easy to clean, does a fabulous job) for slicing and shredding and I own a Vita-Mix. HOWEVER, the mixer itself is the thing, and the Compact is BRILLIANT. I picked up mine ever-so-slightly used and got an extremely good deal on it.

This adorable piece of equipment, which looks like a toy, performs with jaw-dropping efficiency; my Braun hand mixer (now passed along to a friend) sufficed for quite a long time but I wanted to take my baking to a higher level and a hand mixer was not only messy but insufficient. However, I didn't think I had the counter space needed for a stand mixer...until, through research, I stumbled on the Compact, which has a very small footprint, about 8.25" x 9.5", and stands a bit less than 12"--very elegant!
This is what's known as a "planetary" mixer, i.e., the mixing blades revolve around the inside perimeter of the bowl which remains stationary. What's cool about the Compact is that it's literally planetary because in addition to revolving, it also spins (think the earth on its axis); this makes for remarkably efficient mixing and I might add that there's little-to-no need to scrape the bowl--the beating whisk (kind of like a balloon whip) and the stirring whisk (best for batters and such in which too much air is unwanted) manage, due to the Compact's rotation, to incorporate pretty much everything that's in the bowl. The Compact has handled everything I've thrown at it with aplomb.

I haven't used my Compact to make bread yet but one of the reasons I felt I had to have this machine was because of the ease with which it's reputed to handle dough (there are various videos on YouTube that attest to this, not to mention satisfied customer reviews all over the Internet including on this page). Bosch claims that this little machine and its 1-gallon bowl can handle up to 6 lbs. of bread dough and I believe them. The included bread hook is also recommended for use with extremely heavy cookie doughs--no cookie paddle is available for the Compact, hence one uses either the stirring whisk or the hook. You have to figure that anything that can handle THAT much bread dough isn't likely to crap out under a lighter load.

The 4750 differs a bit from the other Compacts in the MUM series and is, frankly, a little spiffier although not in any way that would affect performance. It has a series of indicator lights that not only let you know that your Compact is plugged in but at which speed it's running (although the Compacts are listed as having four speeds, there are actually seven because 1 - 3 have in-between settings as well). It has a retractable cord, whereas all but the 4620 and 4635 have external, wrap-around storage at the back of the mixer and to the best of my knowledge, the 4750 is the only Compact with a "momentary pulse" setting (it engages ALL of the indicator lights). I suspect it's more practical for use with the blender.
All of the other Compacts have a position on their dials for a function known as "park"; this electronically places the whisk or hook into the correct position that allows for raising the arm from the bowl. The 4750, however, does this automatically as soon as you put its dial in the "off" position (not, however, if you pull the plug)--a genius among Compacts! It also has a silver-tone finish to coordinate with its bowl (don't get too excited--it's paint). An anti-splash cover (blue!) is included that allows for adding additional ingredients and is easily removed if desired without stopping the machine. I rarely use it but I'm glad it's there. In addition, there are any number of very cool, but not cheap, attachments available, including an ice cream maker, that attach by means of two motor drives, both of which have covers for when not in use.

There aren't enough superlatives to describe the MUM 4750 UC Kitchen Machine, especially for a single person, a couple, or even a small family. These machines are no longer made in Germany but hey, Slovenia seems to do a better job than China because this is an extremely well-made appliance. If you're on the fence about purchasing any of the more recent Compacts, don't be--I understand there are Compacts that have been in use for 20+ years. Check out the videos on YouTube for demonstations; a Compact is a worthwhile investment.
