5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent spacing makes this a winner, November 20, 2009
This review is from: Bosch : PGL985UC 36 Gas Cooktop 5 Burner Stainless
I've looked at many cooktops recently, from the basic $500 models to the near-$2000 designer ones, and what sets the Bosch apart isn't the price, the specifications, or the looks, but the layout. Many 5-burner cooktops simply have too little burner spacing that allows for the use of a large pan without obstructing at least one of the other burners.

My criteria is being able to fit (as in properly center) a 14" wok on the hottest burner, an 11" pot on the second hottest, an 8" fry pan and a 7" sauce pot. It wasn't so much that I'll be using that all at once all the time, but if they fitted, then I know my other pieces like the 15" Lodge skillet and 10" dutch oven will work with no issues. Hey, it's easier carrying around a steel and aluminum than it is carrying around American cast iron!

Some of the ones I've looked, while beautiful with the angled spacing and curved grates, are functionally AWFUL, as you essentially have a 36" cooktop that has one usable burner. Once the wok went on, the other burners were obstructed. Yep, I'm gonna be cooking for 8 and it's time to dig out the Duktig cookware set! Uh, no, that's not going to work.

I kept going back to the Bosch. All four pieces fitted with room to spare; there was even room for a 10" on the right, as the 7" fits on the simmer burner with the 11" in front. Imagine that ... a five burner cooktop, with five usable burners.

If you notice in the picture, the four outside burners are spaced closer towards the edge, offering more space around the big center burner. Side-to-side, there's 13" of burner spacing, as opposed to 10" and less on some others. Front-to-back, there's 9", which is respectable since there is limited depth. The grates are taller than the knobs, so that's another obstruction that one doesn't need to worry so much about. A minor concern is that one does need to be more careful around the knobs ... it's not tight (to me) at all between the knobs and the grates, but for folks with very large hands, it's something to look into. Overall, the intelligently spaced burners was what really set this one apart from the competition. The looks and a very reasonable price is the icing on the cake.

5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY BOSCH!!!!!!!!!!!--correction, October 13, 2009
This review is from: Bosch : PGL985UC 36 Gas Cooktop 5 Burner Stainless
BUYER BEWARE!!! THIS COOKTOP IS A PIECE OF GARBAGE!!! SO MUCH FOR GERMAN ENGINEERING. I PURCHASED THIS COOKTOP FROM LOWE'S AND HAD A PLUMBER INSTALL IT. THE CONTROL KNOBS DID NOT WORK!! WHEN YOU TURN THE KNOBS TO IGNITE THE GAS, THEY COME ON, BUT YOU MUST HOLD THE KNOBS IN PLACE FOR THEM TO WORK. WHAT KIND OF CRAZY NONESENSE IS THAT? I WILL NOW ATTEMPT TO HAVE IT SERVICED BY AN AUTHORIZED BOSCH DEALER. CAN YOU BELIEVE? THIS UNIT WAS THE WORST. IT WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO BE REPLACED, BUT AFTER THE ONE YEAR WARRANTY, I AM SCREWED!!!

I contacted Bosch, and they IMMEDIATELY sent a certified technician to my home to analyze and correct the problem. It turns out my counter was what was keeping the knobs from igniting and maintaining the flame. Go figure? Anyway, I just wanted to update my review. Thanks.
