This compact drill has about all the features and quality you could ask for, including "hammer action" when desired.

If you don't need the hammer-drill option, see alternatives below. Smaller, lighter, cheaper.

PROs:

- Compact - battery in handle
- Shape & feel - nice
- Rubberized in key places
- 2-speed gearbox - up to 1300 RPM
- Chuck feels like quality. No slop or wobble.
- Fast drilling in concrete (see Note 1 and video road test)
- Fuel gauge: 3-step + blink warning
- 30-minute charger with good status read-outs
- LED Light (see Note 2)
- Auto spindle lock (hand tighten screws)
- Brake (saves time on repetitive operations)

OKs:

- 3 year warranty (2 years battery) *Only if you register*
- Cloth case
- Owner manual (see Note 3)
- There is no electronic squeal upon start-up
- The chuck on mine has no slop or wobble (big problem with earlier PS31s).

CONs:

- No strap hole
- Reduced warranty if you fail to register
- Misc Nit picks (see Note 4)

- - - Specifications - - -

- 2 lbs 5.0 oz (2.3 lbs)
- 7.3"l x 6.9"h x 2.1"w (1.5"w stated in listing is wrong)
- Top/side clearance 1.08"/1.08" (from bit center to housing edge)
- Handle circumference: 6.2"
- 3/8" chuck capacity
- RPM: 0-380, 0-1300
- Torque: 265/124 in lbs.

I got this based on all the good reviews I have seen in the internet. If you are a homeowner, stop looking and get this. I used this drill to put together a couple pieces of furniture hand some stuff on the wall. Reviews online say it will drill through mason blocks and 3/4 plywood. I have no doubt this will do it. I didn't even charge the battery that came with it and used it for the next month doing all the jobs I just talked about. I havre owned a Milwaukee and Craftsman 18 volt, this is MUCH lighter, and better quality than the Craftsman, and Much lighter, and easily just as good quality as the Milwaukee. Easily stronger than the Craftsman, and just as strong as the Milwaukee. I am very picky with everything I buy online, and I am VERY satisfied with this purchase.

Bosch has always been hit or miss for me... I used a Bosch circular saw and miter box saw for some time and have grown to hate them, however the Bosch table saw I own is a dream. My cordless drills get heavy daily use, so drills that don't keep up, usually end up in a box somewhere. I got this Bosch drill as a backup to my 12v Milwaukee as it's my most used drill.

Out of the box, both the Bosch and Milwaukee drills are very similar... same weight, same feel. Both have very different motors... the Milwaukee's motor feels rougher, but also seems a bit more powerful and a tad bit faster. The Bosch, on the other hand, is much smoother. The build-quality of both are outstanding, but I would give Bosch the edge for having thicker rubber padding where it's needed most.

I only have two complaints with the Bosch... first, the battery power indicator on the tool seems inaccurate. With three lights, it seems like the battery level goes down unevenly, with the tool on the single-light level for 75% of the time. My Milwaukee battery level is much more accurate, and I take notice of it quite often. My second complaint is the led illumination... the chuck blocks the light so that the bit tip is always in a shadow.

The most useful feature of this tool, for me, is the selector rings behind the chuck. My Milwaukee drill only has one, so when I want to switch between drilling and torque-limited screw-driving, I have to spin the ring all the way around the tool. This is a big deal to me when I have only one drill available and I'm switching back and forth constantly. The Bosch allows you to set the torque on the outer ring, then quickly switch between drilling and torque-limited driving with a slight turn of the inner ring.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
We've been doing a bit of home improvement in the last few months, and my husband is a woodworker, so this hammer drill was incredibly useful to have. We've had quite a few drills in the last few years- we've never splurged on a really good one and always got slightly less expensive ones than the Bosch drills. But now that we've used the Bosch for a variety of applications for several weeks, I don't think we can go back to the less expensive ones.

A quick list of what we found particularly interesting about the Bosch excels at:
* Comfortable
* Charges very quickly
* Has plenty of power for most jobs while still being smaller and lighter than 14.4V & 18V drills
* The forward / reverse switch is located a bit higher than our Milwaukee, which is very nice because when they are lower it is easy to accidentally switch it from reverse to forward (when using right handed) with the side of your trigger finger. For lefties, I'd imagine the situation would be even worse since they would be accidentally switching from forward to reverse.
* The two speed gear box is great. It gives you much better control when you need to perform low speed/high torque operations. I don't know how I lived without it before.
* Convenient switching between driving, regular drilling, and hammer drilling operations with the mode selector ring which is independent from the clutch setting.
* Powers through masonry great for such a small drill. For big jobs you probably want a larger cordless or corded drill but for small and/or occasional jobs it is really great.
* Is still plenty small & light enough for regular drilling & driving operations
* If you don't need hammer features, though, the PS31 is a bitt smaller & lighter.

Highly recommended. Do yourself a favor and splurge on this hammer drill if it's something you use regularly. I promise you it's worth the extra cost and you'll be using it for years and years to come.
