Bosch's PS31-2A 12-volt max drill/driver has a compact, lightweight design for easy handling overhead and in tight spaces, allowing users to tackle professional jobs with ease. Offering high torque and the convenience of two speed settings, this tool is powerful and user-friendly for fast, efficient drilling and driving. This drill/driver combines speed, power, and performance, making it ideal for professionals and do-it-yourselfers. The drill/driver's build consists of a 7-inch head length and 2-pound body. This streamlined design makes the drill small enough to fit into tight areas, and well-suited for continuous overhead work. This drill/driver also features a 3/8-inch single sleeve chuck, allowing the tool to be ideal for a variety of applications. It also has a variable speed trigger so that speed regulation will always be perfect. With this small drill/driver you can work anywhere, anytime. An integrated LED illuminates dark corners and low-light areas so your visibility is never compromised. In addition to providing illumination, this drill driver is also trademarked with Bosch's Electronic Cell Protection (ECP), which extends the run time and life of the tool. The fuel gauge is conveniently located on the side of the tool for easy battery management. Bosch has invented a drill/driver that is 22-percent more compact, has 25-percent more torque, and can perform at speeds up to 15-percent faster than ever before.

I have used this drill for the following:

- Drilling holes in wood/metal up to half inch diameter (drill bit)
- Drilling holes in metal/wood/foam core doors w/ 1.5" hole saw
- Assembling ceiling fans
- Installing window handle/latch hardware
- Mixing tile flooring sanded grout

- compact size...handle fits perfectly into the hammer 'pouch' of a tool belt and the batteries are small/easy to carry
- Battery power/quickness of charge (w/ 30 min charger)
- case allows me to carry the charger, (4) batteries, drill, and my Bosch PS41-2A Impactor with room to spare
- 20 clutch settings for precise set and forget torque repetitions. (perfect for easily stripped brass screws)
- Bang for buck

- would love a 1/2" chuck but probably not practical with the size of this drill.
- Short battery life when using this drill instead of a more practical tool such as an 18V or corded drill (mixing sanded grout).

Bottom line: If you use this drill as it is intended, you will be 100% satisfied. If you push this drill outside of it's intended use you will be 100% satisfied but you will probably need some spare batteries ready to go.

As a maintenance supervisor at a 200+ unit complex in Oregon, owning this combo is fantastic! Having a drill that is compact enough to fit into your back pocket (not all the way, but enough so it won't fall out) makes my job that much easier. It is just as strong, if not stronger, than my 18v Ryobi but almost half the size. There is a slight, but noticeable delay on getting to full speed from the time you pull the trigger in all the way. It isn't that big of a deal because I often start off screws and drilling slowly to make sure I'm doing it right, but I have had a few times where I noticed it.
The L-BOXX system makes it easy to have screws and other hardware for quick access in my maintenance golf cart. The L-BOXX that the drill comes in does have plenty of extra room even with the charger, battery and drill in there. However, I keep my charger in the shop and the drill is on me always, so I was left with an empty box with no organizing boxes in it. I am puzzled as to what to put in there because when you lock the two boxes together you have to detach them in order to open the bottom box. So whatever you put in there needs to be something you don't want to have access to often. I planned on being in and out of these boxes constantly so when I saw that I knew the bottom box would hardly ever get used.

Quality drill in a compact size.
Battery level display
LED light on the front that will turn on even if the drill is in the lock position
Quick charge time
Great, sturdy cases. Really, really fantastic. I turned the case upside-down a few times and everything stayed in it's place.
Multiple handle locations to carry both cases locked together or separate.

Can't access bottom case when two are locked together without detaching.
Slight, yet noticeable, delay to full-speed drilling.

The Bosch PS31-2AL 12-Volt 3/8-Inch drill driver is a surprisingly capable little powerhouse that doesn't disappoint.

The first thing I noticed about the Bosch was the compact size and great balance in the hand. The grip is about the diameter of a standard 10oz. tube of caulk and fits easily in an average-size hand (see photo above). Users with very small hands may find it a bit difficult to grasp. Those users may prefer a tool with a battery that doesn't live inside the hand grip such as the DeWalt DCD-710.

The tool comes packaged inside a new L-Boxx container that definitely takes carrying cases to a new level in moderately-priced tools. The L-Boxx cases are modular and stackable. Loaded with the PS31 and two batteries plus a charger, the case is still half empty so there's plenty of room for bits and accessories.
In a recent YouTube interview, Terry Horan (President and CEO of the Robert Bosch Tool Corporation) said the L-Boxx system was designed with contractors in mind and their increasingly more compact trucks. The L-Boxx system is way better than either the briefcase-style tool case or the duffel bag.

In use, the Bosch has plenty of power. I've drilled 3/4" holes in wood with a spade bit, 1/4" holes in steel angle iron and I've driven 3" deck screws into construction lumber. Only with the 3/4" spade bit did I feel like I was pushing this little drill to the max but still it accomplished the task! It's amazing how far cordless technology has come in recent years.

One difference of note is that the tool begins to loose power when the battery is very low. My other Lithium-Ion tools simply stop without warning when depleted with no perceptible decline in performance.

I have a Dewalt 18V - heavy booger...after long day, your arm is ready to fall off using it. Plus, it doesn't work in confined spaces. So...Bosch on sale...ordered it. First Bosch tool I have owned.
I am not a contractor...we do a lot of mission work, and simple work at houses and at church.

First - the torque you will get from this small-format driver is amazing. We were building a stage at church - lots of 2X4 joists, 2X2 bracing, 3" wood screws. Repeatedly, I would "finish" the driving of screws larger drivers (Dewalt, Craftsman, No-Names) would not finish without stripping the heads of the screws. Several people commented on the amount of torque such a small driver would generate.

Second - the batteries. 12V - lasted about 2-3 hours, fairly continuous use. The battery indicator built in doesn't help all that much - because it held "full" for most of the time, then would dive off in power as it reached its limit - as expected in lithium batteries. My Dewalt will barely manage 3 hours. But - the is FAST! Think...15 minutes! On day 2, the charge on one battery was dead, the other 1/4 charge (one light). Guys laughing - "Hey, that's a neat trick to get out of working there Pastor!!! Don't charge your batteries!!! hahaha" I had the last laugh...dropped battery into charger, started putting up staging...sure enough, almost discharged battery I started with died after about 15 minutes...and jaws hit the floor when I calmly went to the charger, pulled a FULLY CHARGED battery out, dropped the other one in, and hit the stage again! Meanwhile, they were struggling to charge their 18V's overnight...

Third - Size/Weight...great for a lot of use, in confined spaces, overhead, off-handed, etc.
