Dust extraction that works,
By James R. Smith "jsmithsussex" (Milwaukee wi) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bosch RA1172AT Router Dust Extraction Hood Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've purchased this and put it on my router and did some plunge routing. 70 % of the chips were captured and the clean-up was considerably less. I also noticed that my dust mask seemed to plug up less. It apparently get the fine dust too. For the cost it's worth the effort. The black hose adapter converts the hose from metric to english. I would recommend that you convert to a larger hose fairly quickly because the small hose cause a significant loss in vacumm the longer it is.

May not fit your Bosch router,

This review is from: Bosch RA1172AT Router Dust Extraction Hood Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought the Bosch 1617EVSPK router kit last December and this dust extraction kit last week. BEWARE that if your Bosch router is fairly new and has a fine adjustment shaft that goes into the base of the fixed base (model RA1161 I think), the side dust extraction hood in this kit will NOT fit. Bosch recently redesigned the fixed router base and is aware of the problem with fitting their existing dust hood on this base. They say they will release a modified dust extractor hood kit "in a few months". I cannot comment on the performance of the other hood as I'm selling my kit to my brother-in-law and waiting on the redesigned hoods to be released. Check your fixed router base for an extended shaft before purchasing this kit.***UPDATE 6/08*** I repurchased this item and they've redesigned it so that it now fits.

Collects the dust,
This review is from: Bosch RA1172AT Router Dust Extraction Hood Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I am giving 4 stars instead of 5 because some dust does escape. It is about what you would expect. In my opinion it is removing about 90% of the dust. I will try with another vacuum system that has more CFM to see if this helps.

Dust problems (mostly) solved,

My husband was routing new interior doors for our home. Without the Bosch router dust exraction hood, he was rigging tarps all over the basement to control the dust, keep it from covering everything and drifting upstairs into the main part of the house. He reviewed various products and decided that the Bosch kit was the right choice. After he installed it, the dust escaping from his workshop was noticeably diminished. It's a great tool and worked great for us.

Router Dust Extraction Hood,

Had to hollow out some wood plates and the Dust Extraction Hood worked great. Only problem is the two holes that are in the router base for the edge jig allow some dust to be blown out instead of into the vacumm hose. Small problem that was fixed with a couple of foam ear plugs.

Bosch Dust Hoods,
By Nekobasu "Rob the Builder" (South Lake Tahoe, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bosch RA1172AT Router Dust Extraction Hood Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
In addition to the Bosch router table, I bought the Bosch router kit with plunge and fixed bases, the dust collection kit, and the fixed base which is made specifically for attaching to the router table.
Routers spew a lot of shavings and dust, so capturing the mess at the source saves lots of time cleaning up. Although the router table has a built-in dust collection hood, it only captures the dust that spews out above the surface of the table. Since one of the Bosch router accessory dust hoods attaches to the fixed base under the table, I thought it would be great to attach it, thus collecting dust from both above and below the table surface. Alas, I couldn't accomplish this because the table stand obstructs attaching the accessory hood when that base is attached to the table. So far, neither Bosch nor any other manufacturer has devised a simple tool-less quick change collet for inserting and removing router bits. I look forward to that day.

Routers send out ridiculous dust so this is a no brainer. I use the one that hooks onto the main body of the router for most jobs (as opposed to the other one included in the kit that mounts to the bottom of the non-marring base for edge routing).

Doesn't work under Bosch Router Table,

This review is from: Bosch RA1172AT Router Dust Extraction Hood Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
Very disappointed with Bosch for designing a system of attachments that don't work together. I purchased a RA1165 base to mount under a RA1181 table. Then purchased a RA1172AT Dust Extraction Hood Kit ... with the intention to mount the dust extractor hood to the base, using the adapter to bring the hose size to 2 1/2 inches. You can attach the dust hood to the base, but the outlet points at an angle towards the FRONT of the router table. It is not possible to attach the VAC020 adapter to the dust hood and angle the hose so it exits the rear. There simply is no clearance. I should have returned the entire system, but decided to try to solve the problem. The 1 1/2 inch port size of the dust hood required the purchase of a POOL vacuum hose that is flexible enough to turn nearly 180 degrees beneath the table and exit the rear. There I used the VAC02020 adapter to attach it to a 2 1/2 inch Y.
BTW, here's is Bosch's response: "Thank you for writing. The RA1172AT is for use with the fixed and plunge bases included with the 1617 and 1618 routers. The hood is not designed for use with the RA1165 base. A 2-1/2" hose can be connected on the top side of the router table directly to the dust chamber the router bits sits in for dust collection on the router table." So Bosch designed an under-table base that doesn't support Dust extraction, EVEN THOUGH you can physically attach the dust hood to the base! If this sounds complicated, it is. And it's a direct result of poor design by Bosch. The under-table base should be aligned to port to the rear (like the router fence dust port). The under table dust hood should be 2 1/2 inches (like the fence). And there should be ample clearance for a hose to exit. I am going to post this exact review to all my reviews of the various components I purchased. |
