Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Bosch ROS20VS is designed to give even the most exacting finish carpenters, cabinet makers, woodworkers and others exactly what they want, beginning with great performance and results. The optimized combination of pad orbit and rotation delivers fast removal and a well-blended, ultra-smooth finish. Bosch's integral pad dampening system, a pad braking system, is designed to eliminate the most common complaint of random orbit sander users; swirl marks on the workpiece. Finish quality is further enhanced with the use of a soft microcellular backing pad. The pliable pad ensures a smooth, fine finish on flat or contoured surfaces.

Bosch has hit a home run with this great redesign of an already great tool. This is an update of the popular Bosch 1295DVS(Variable Speed) random orbit sander. The Bosch 1295 was rated the best value AND the best overall random orbit sander in the August 2006 issue of Fine Woodworker magazine. It beat out the equivalent Festool, DeWalt, Makita, Craftsman, Rigid, Ryobi, and Porter-Cable.

I bought the ROS20VSK for $69.97 +tax at a big box retailer. I used the 1295DVS several months ago and now this one for a few weeks. They are very similar in performance. Same smooth start-up and great motion yet relatively low vibration and easy to control. Same vigorous removal of material but with a very even, smooth pattern. I'd like to see a side by side performance test of the ROS20VS and the 1295DVS because their internals are somewhat different, the most significant of which is the ROS20VS's less powerful motor.

The visible differences in this model are the features that were the biggest complaints from reviews of the 1295DVS. Bosch seems to have been listening: dust collection, sanding pad durability and ergonomics are all improved.

Ergonomics - The top has been given more form and elongated, similar to other random orbitals, but Bosch has made it's "tail" a bit more substantial than most. I thought it might get in the way and make it clunky but it doesn't. The shape allows for solid two handed sanding if needed and many other secure & comfortable hand holds. The variable speed dial has been moved to the back so there is no chance of accidentally adjusting it. Molded rubber has been added to all the right places for hands. There is even a small patch of rubber in the back above the dust port that is prefect extra grip for an index finger or thumb.

I am impressed with this sander and recommend it. I have not owned a RO sander before and put my trust in the reviews here. The reviews are all accurate. Vibration is low. Hand fatigue is low. The dust collector does an excellent job for short periods of sanding. (Remember to empty it when sanding for long periods.) At first I thought nothing was being sanded for lack of dust but the collector was full and imperfections in the maple board were perfectly smoothed.

I have tried a more expensive Makita which had more power. It removed material more quickly when coarse sanding but I prefer the all-around finishing properties of this Bosch. It's a good value.

I was trying to strip old wallpaper glue that had been applied - many years ago - to bare plaster, some bare drywall, and some primed drywall. Stripping with 80 grit worked better than expected. There was a fiber tape sealing the plaster at the corners that was frayed, so that was spackled over pretty heavily; 220 grit and the sander on it's lowest setting let me work that down to a respectable finish.

The sander has several hours of continuous use, which isn't nearly enough to judge it's reliability. That said, after hours of sanding with this, my hands don't feel numb from the vibration, and my hands are about as unused to this type of labor as you're going to get.

This gadget saved me days of labor. Worth my money. Hopefully in the long run it lives up to the rest of the glowing reviews.

Edit:

Probably a dozen more hours sanding the glue off the walls of the adjoining room. Previously, we figured the only option was to re-drywall this room, as no amount of scraping or scrubbing or chemicals were making any difference to whatever glue they had used.

So I moved to 60 grit paper.

The dust filter is worth it's weight in gold; it catches the majority of whatever I was sanding off the walls. My hands are large (3XL?), so my pinky fingers got a little heat from the exhaust vent on the side of the tool, but no amount of leaning on this thing - for hours - caused it to have the least bit of problems.

Heavy grit sanding discs - like the 60 grit - seem to give up on the velcro side long, long, long before the abrasive side is done. I'm guessing that's the paper I went with, as a new disc sticks to the tool like glue.

Two young kids have reduced me to a weekend DIYer at best, therefore I don't have a lot of time to mess around with tools that jam easily or can only perform on a B-grade level. I researched the heck out of RO sanders, and narrowed it down to about three--DeWalt, Porter Cable, and Bosch. The variable speed option and the dust collection capabilities tipped the scales for Bosch. I don't even bother with a dust mask anymore (although I know I should) when sanding; the dust collection is that good. The sander has a smooth start up, and the tool vibration is slight to minimal. I think this sander was about $10 more than my other top choices, and I definitely made the right decision; it was well worth the money. If this sander seems like it has a bunch of features you'll never use, you won't be sorry you over-bought. Most likely, you'll use the features but just won't know it.
