The magnets are very strong and "lock" on a metal surface like a refrigerator.

I was using it today with no receiver, outdoors, on a sunny day, and was having no problem seeing the laser at 100 feet!

In other words, the horizontal line will only work at roughly the height that the unit sits at.

First off I base my opinions on a lifetime 40+ years in the residential/commercial construction industry as a finish carpenter/cabinet builder/installer of institutional and residential casework, trims, and cabinets. Over this time I have enjoyed using all types of new and innovative tools along with my many traditional favorites! The use of lasers in the field along with CAD equipment in the shop have to be some of the most evolutionary new developments in our industry in that time! I have also had the pleasure of using several different brands/models of laser levels borrowed from co-works and supplied by employers and I have found varying results through this process! The big problem with some of these units tends to be varying width of the projected line leading to inaccuracy as distance escalates! The better the laser, the more consistent the projected beam, the more accurate your work!
Of those models I have experience with, the Bosch and Dewalt models really impressed me with their accuracy AND value while the rest of the field wasn't as good or more expensive for basically the same performance!
So when it came time for me to spend my own hard earned money, I pulled the trigger on the Bosch GLL2-45! Excellence accuracy, great range, versatile mounting accessories, and EXCELLENT price on Amazon!
I did go with the GLL2-45 instead of the GLL2-50 since the 45 is basically the same head unit, was $70 less and included the suspended ceiling mount! I can purchase the mount that come with the GLL2-50 for $50 here on Amazon and have all the mounts for less then the GLL2-50 alone!

First of all I'm impressed with the overall value of this laser level. In the box: 1) the unit 2) Cushioned carrying case with Velcro belt loop 3) Two very well designed attachments 4) Some sort of a target and 5) Three AA batteries.

Attachments: The photo of the attachments on the front of the box (lower left corner) shows the two attachments connected together (magnetically). The picture of the back of the box shows them separate.
The two attachments are very well designed. The first attachment screws into the bottom of the laser unit. The unit can slide forward 1 1/2 inches in the attachment. The attachment has two, 1 1/2" support pegs that slide out to provide a steady base if setting the unit (in the attachment) right onto a surface like a table or floor. The back side of the attachment sports two very strong 1 1/8" donut magnets (probably neodymium). The magnets are very strong and "lock" on a metal surface like a refrigerator. I had mixed luck on corner braces in our walls. In the older part of the house (plaster), it didn't stick too well - on our recent addition (drywall), it stuck well. At the top there is a tear-drop shaped hole so you can hang it on a screw like a picture.

The second attachment is a strong spring loaded clip. It attaches back-to-back to the first attachment via the magnets and has a small gear that matches the notches on the back of the first attachment. That allows a fine tune adjust of the clipped unit up or down 4" when it is clipped to something.

Without the attachments, the unit attaches to any standard 1/4" tripod mount. It fit all three of my camera tripods.

The operation of this unit covers all the bases. In the unlocked mode ("leveling mode"): 1) It can project a horizontal line only.

I'm happy with mine. A good buy. Accurate. Nice bright line which remains consistent in thickness over distance. When placed on the floor the vertical beam goes down the floor, up the wall and across the ceiling and terminates just behind the devise. This is quite helpful with marking top plates that will be plumb with the base plate without the need for a spirit level for interior framing. It does just about anything you'd want a cross line laser to do. It locks for establishing lines that are not level. It locks the pendulum when turned off so the pendulum is not banging around during transport. I would buy another one.

I decided to get this model because it touted a 65 foot range without a receiver. I was using it today with no receiver, outdoors, on a sunny day, and was having no problem seeing the laser at 100 feet!

The fact that you have to get it within 4° of level for it to 'auto level' was not a problem.

The mounting device that it comes with is well made. It adjusts very smoothly. The clamp is strong and will hold your level well.

I would recommend this to a friend. I would buy again.

I've been meaning to buy a laser level for 2 years and finally did it. Lifechanger! In my humble opinion this unit is right up there for best bang for buck. It projects a vertical and horizontal line as a cross, or you can set it for either just vertical or horizontal, and you can also lock the laser in position so it doesn't self level if you desire. Unit needs to sit fairly level to work; if it sits off kilter to much it will flash until you get it reasonably level and then it will stop flashing once levels are achieved. In other words, the horizontal line will only work at roughly the height that the unit sits at. I also bought the $30 Bosch tripod to use with it. The tripod is cheap and light, it does the job but its a flimsy piece of gear. I think this is the best laser level for the money.
