I purchased this Series 1 set over the newer Series 2 because I like the styling better along with the fact that I could get a pair that's all black with no silver accents.

The frequency range seemed wide with excellent clarity and balance which made it pretty obvious when there was a difference in the quality of the audio source.

The problem with this system was the continuous low-level hiss that wasn't variable with the volume control. This hiss could be heard at the near-field distances within which I sit at the computer and brought back memories of my days listening to cassette tapes. I quickly realized how distracting this would always be when using the computer with no audio because this system has no on/off switch so the speakers are constantly on. Just to make sure that my electronic environment wasn't causing the problem, two other outlets were tried. In one instance I disconnected the system from the computer and plugged it into an outlet in another room of my apartment. The hiss appeared immediately upon plugging in the supplied transformer therefore I returned the system the following day.

A few days after returning the speakers, I called Bose technical support to see if perhaps I had purchased a defective pair or if this was a problem with Series 1 units that had been corrected with the current Series 2 model. The representative was pleasant, sympathetic and respectful but would not commit to a definite answer regarding either point.

Still hoping that I had merely purchased a defective pair, the next day I went to the store where I had purchased the speakers to see if the hiss problem existed with the demonstration model. I felt that if there was no hissing to be heard, I'd simply purchase an identical set. Only one speaker in the demonstration pair was working, but even within the noisy store environment I could hear hissing when placing my ear close to the functional speaker. This indicated to me that in the much quieter confines of my apartment, another pair of these speakers would be just as distracting as the pair I returned.

Right after that I went to two other stores that carry the Series 2 model. I did this to see if perhaps Bose lowered the level of hiss in the new model. In both instances the audible result sounded basically the same as what I heard emanating from the original Series 1 pair that I had returned. The last store I went to also sells the more expensive Companion 20. That system also had hiss but it seemed to be much lower in volume compared to the hiss of the Companion 2.

Perhaps at this price point it's unrealistic to expect an inaudible amount of distortion. However, the amount of hiss I heard from the Bose Companion 2 was simply unacceptable. In defense of Bose I admit that after doing Internet research for an alternative product, it appears that hissing is not an unusual problem with self-powered multi-media speakers of various brands and price points.

I don't normally pay much for computer speakers, but I just got a new desktop from HP and while the speakers are adequate they are not great for music or Netflix etc as they vibrate on loud noises or when there's a lot of base involved.

These BOSE speakers are amazing - the clarity of the music, especially when listening to folksy types like James Taylor or Phillip Phillips, was outstanding.

I don't own a single other BOSE product because quite frankly I can't afford them, but I was lucky enough to get these on sale, but even at the normal price I think anyone who likes music or gaming on their PC will be more than happy.

They look nice too, but they are pretty large, so that was my only negative and it's a small one.

They sell these in many of your local big box stores, and you can test them out in those stores too, and that was what made me decide to give them a try - they really sounded good in a noisy store.

Very simply set up, less than 5 minutes, which includes getting the things out of their box.

Highly recommend them - I have only ever spent about $30-40 on speakers before, but the difference in the sound from these is amazing.

After using these at work for years, I finally came to my senses and ordered a pair for home. Twenty minutes after hookup I'm ordering three more pairs for daughters/friend.
I've never experienced a richer, fuller sound at lower volumes, and when you decide to crank em a bit (like at home), they pump out a surprising wall of sound.

Understand that these aren't designed to fill an auditorium, but a pair snuggled under your monitor creates an impressive and focused cocoon of sound.

i bought these speakers back in january of this year and let me tell you they sound really good. for music it has the legendary bose quality. games even sound good. but... they lack a bit when watching a movie. and having no off switch to turn off the speakers is a drag, still they are a very good speaker system.

I use these as desktop speakers for my laptop, or for my I pod when I am cleaning my room. They produce great sound, you can hear the music clearly and there is NO distortion from the I pod to the speakers, like what you would get with a tape deck Ipod adapter. Had them for a year, have blasted them sometimes, and they still sound great.

These speadkers were on my wish list and ordered by mistake with what I really wanted to buy. I tried to stop the order but was informed by email that I just had to send it back when it arrived. It arrived and I thought I would just listen to them and then decide. I am very happy I did. Love the sound. Better base response if placed out front of a wall. Only problem is the interface into a laptop. It's straight and gets in the way if you use a mouse and your headphone jack is on the right. I think it would get in the way if my jack were in front too. Easy fix. I bought a right angle adapter for 5 bucks but wish it came with it. Overall great pair of speakers and seem portable too.

Really like these speakers. Sound is crystal clear and accurate . True to the Bose name. Impressive sound and stylish design. Just the right amount of bass. Couldn't be more pleased with these speakers.

These inexpensive speakers live up to the Bose name, they make my IPod rock. I replaced some smaller Sony speakers and I now have a system worth listening to.

If you like music that has any amount of bass, these speakers are not suffice. As a big house, rap, rock, just about anything with bass fan, I am very unhappy.

Use this speaker on Winamp(R) (winamp.com) + Stereotool plug-in (stereotool.com) and get the best sound.

I recommend use it in your laptop or PC music.
