Bose quality...with Bose pricing
on October 17, 2013
The good: It's the exact same high-quality OEM AC adapter that ships with the Bose SoundLink Mini.
The bad: The price is ridiculous.
The SoundLink Mini has received rave reviews in terms of sound quality...at least when compared to other portable Bluetooth speaker systems. That praise, however, has typically been accompanied by a range of valid criticisms. High on that list is the fact that while the SL Mini has a USB port, the device cannot be charged through it...unlike almost every other competing product. Instead, the SL Mini requires a proprietary AC adapter. Of course, you are here, so you probably knew that already. ;)
Bose's reasoning for such a proprietary adapter appears to be that the SL Mini requires an AC adapter that delivers more voltage than the USB specification allows. Of course, other competing products charge and operate fine with a lower voltage AC adapter, so this Bose design decision is a bit curious. Regardless, the fact remains that if you need a replacement or spare AC adapter, your spare USB charger is not going to cut it.
So what do you get for your $30? The same OEM charger that came with your SL Mini, including fold-able prongs for max portability. What don't you get? Anything else, including a vehicle charging plug. No, that is a separate product...for another $30.
So what are your options? Well, there are many third-party adapters available. You just need to find one that is 12 Volts DC, at least 0.833 Amps (although a higher rated current should be fine), and center positive polarity. Amazon has numerous such products...and these two are explicitly tagged as compatible with the SL Mini:
- Standard wall charger for $16: [...]
- Combined wall and vehicle charger for $27: [...]
Of course, there are many others not explicitly tagged as compatible that cost far less. In fact, you should probably be able to find one for well under $10, but since I have not tested any specific third-party adapter, I won't link to any others. When I do, I will post those links. That said, you are unlikely to find one that is as portable as the Bose OEM adapter, which fits nicely into the front pocket of the SL Mini's travel case when its prongs are folded.
So in summary:
- Function: 4/5
- Value/cost: 1/5
If they included a vehicle adapter plug, I would have increased the "function" rating to 5/5 and the "value/cost" rating to 4/5, but they didn't...so they get 3 stars from me, which is turning out to be a trend for all of my reviews for the SL Mini's accessories. Here's a hint Bose - the SL Mini's accessory prices are ridiculous...and we have ALL noticed.
