I've owned all previous versions of the SoundLink including the SoundLink Mini. I was very much looking forward to buying the SoundLink III as soon as I could to see how it shapes up to all the previous versions. Bottom line is that it looks much nicer, sounds better and has vastly better battery life (a claimed 14 hours.)

All is not perfect in Bose land however... Bose has still turned up its nose to aptX, NFC and handsfree. Why Bose, why? Bose still does not provide a remote control nor any controls on the speaker to play/pause music or to change tracks. Bose doesn't even include an AUX-in cable... even the most lowly of Bluetooth Speakers include an AUX in cable.

The SoundLink III is sporting a new case design which is quite attractive and slightly larger in height and width than the older SoundLinks.

Bose did away with the nylon cover/stand. That takes away some protection for the speaker but Bose offers optional cases ($35.) The speaker comes with only a power adapter. It is 100-240V, 50/60Hz and has a folding, non-polarized plug. I like that the power adapter, when it's plugged in to a standard wall outlet, doesn't take up so much space to not allow you to use the other outlet.

The new case design is clean, simple and attractive. The top row of controls now sports a protective rubberized cover.

I have both. Here is my thoughts:
1. Appearance:
SoundLink 3 has a old-timer classic look. The silver part of the box is paint sprayed mesh. the black parts around have a fine texture on it. The top is soft rubber. The whole thing feels like a old radio (in a good way) with a modern touch. I personally like it better than the jawbone box or UE style, which is way too future-ish young-kids looking. SoundLink 3 is also pretty heavy. Won't be a good choice to carry around. All in all, very solid build.
SoundLine Mini reminds me the Iphone. It is a whole piece of Aluminum, as least looks like it. Also heavy for its size. but much more portable.
2. Sound quality:

Low Volume: SoundLink3 sounds better than SoundLink2 hands down. When played at same low volume, soundLink3 is MUCH better than soundLink2 in my opinion. The sound is much more clear, vocal really stands out. the high pitch is better, but still not quite there. The mini actually sounds the best at low volume. SoundLink 3 has a "deeper/wider/thicker" sound than the mini, but some how the mini sounds more "clear" at low volume and my ear find it very pleasing.
When I say low volume, I mean put it on my office desk. close the door and listen to it when working.

High Volume: SoundLink 3 can get really loud. I can not bear how loud it gets when I crank it up. but I never liked loud music so keep that in mind. For my life, I will never need that much noise. But you may want it. when turn the volume up, SoundLink 3 start to sounds better than the Mini. I am impressed it can go quite loud without much distortion. I am not saying mini is not loud. To me, Mini is good enough for my medium size room, I don't even need to turn it up that much for it starts to feel too loud.

Having several Bluetooth speakers I tried to withstand the temptation to buy the latest Soundlink from Bose, but ultimately caved in after reading several reviews noting its superior sound over its predecessor the Soundlink II and how amazed I am with what Bose was able to do with my previous most recent purchase the Soundlink Mini. Now that Bose offers recent releases in the ultraportable in addition to portable category the decision of what speaker to buy has become even more difficult then choosing between the large list of competing companies. I will try my best to help others make an easier decision to avoid spending way too much money on speakers as I have.

BUILD and STYLE:
Bose is the Apple of Bluetooth speakers. Their designs offer a minimalist, yet refined quality and their latest addition continues this trend just in a different form factor. The craftsmanship is stellar with its wraparound metal grill, nearly matching the Soundlink Mini and exceeding the Soundlink II which has painted plastic for its sides and edges . Despite the different form factor, the size of the Soundlink III is nearly the same as the Soundlink II, which is small enough to be an easy travel companion. Sure the Soundlink Mini is smaller, but really not so much where it makes notable difference when taking on the go. The most obvious omission from the first 2 generations of the speaker is the folding grill cover. Many might find this to be a bigger omission than it actually is. While the folding cover protected the metal grill, the more prone to dings plastic edges and corners are left exposed. That is how I found out the sides are plastic on the Soundlink II and never even realized I had bumped it into anything.
