Style Name: SoundTouch Portable Verified Purchase
(Updated from 3 to 4 stars with relevant changes listed below, but still going to return due to the Airplay bugs. Going to try the Libratone Zipp instead: Libratone LT-300-US-2801 Zipp Wireless Portable Speaker - Classic Collection)

Diagnosis: It's a decent product, but not a great one, and Bose should seriously consider fixing some of the problems in a software update. I *want* to like this device. Otherwise I would not have invested the time to write this lengthy review. I'm going to keep the device for a few more weeks to see if it grows on me. If the audio streaming bugs become less frequent, I may keep it.

Some critical things that are not mentioned in the printed materials (found these on the Bose website after the commenters below mentioned one of them):

Press and hold the Volume Down plus the following number buttons for:
1 & vol-: Factory reset. (Hold 10 secs.)
2 & vol-: Broadcast temp wifi network for standalone Airplay streaming or wireless network setup/change. (Hold 5 secs.)
3 & vol-: Disable/enable device wifi. (Hold 5 secs.)
4 & vol-: Software update. (Hold 5 secs.)
5 & vol-: System info (Hold 5 secs, then press volume up or down through the info screens.)

Press and hold AUX to reset the device when it crashes or hangs.

First of all, the good parts:

1. Sound is very good for a small, portable package. This is basically the only thing I tested prior to purchasing, so I have no complaints regarding sound quality.
2.

Lovely product. I am quite particular about sound quality, and I have a reasonably high end audio system. I purchased the Sound Touch portable, and found it to be the best sounding of all these small devices. Easy to setup and use, I can take it all over the house with me. I understand a software update in 6 months or so will give me Spotify access.
Although a little pricey, you get what you pay for. I doubt there is anything this small and portable with this type of sound quality.

This product is, essentially, a high end speaker with a few, very well designed and implemented, Wi-Fi features.
Well worth the 5 stars. And this is why:

First of all, I wouldn't give it five stars if the sound were not outstanding. But I am not going to talk about it here, with Bose it goes without saying.
The purpose of this review is rather to address some common complaints, mainly about the set-up process, in my opinion totally unjustified.

I have seen a lot of complaints about having to use a cable for the initial set-up.

THE CABLE IS OPTIONAL. It can make the set-up process easier, when using a computer.

The SoundTouch System is able to broadcast its own network - you would have to press together key # 2 and volume down (speaker symbol and minus sign) for a few seconds. Then, go into your computer/phone/table Wi-Fi settings, find the Bose network, connect to it and complete the setup. This is a onetime deal.
The set-up process is easy and intuitive. I completely disagree with the criticism to this step. It takes just a few clicks, key strokes and 5 minutes to do it. The steps are very well outlined in the user's manual.
I just wish that those who complained about the "cable issue" had the patience to explore the manual before complaining about it.
If you cannot follow this simple process, then just call the Bose customer service - they are available all day, very courteous and professional and they really know their stuff. It is unfair to down rate an excellent product just because you lack the minimal skills or the patience to follow a very simple set-up process.

Now, the beauty of it is that Apple users (iPhone/Pod/Pad) don't even need to go through the set-up process.

I was sold on this product by a BestBuy salesperson. Sound is what you would expect from Bose. I thought that the WiFi feature would be great - more range than Bluetooth. Here's the main problem: Although there are 6 pre-sets, those pre-sets can only be applied to one device. You can have your other computers, your ipads, your iPHones, etc. with the app, but the app is basically a remote control. You can't stream the content from more than one device unless you uninstall the original device and re-install. This is an issue for me because my family members all have different iTunes and different Pandora stations. I also could not get the MS download to work, so we had to go to the Mac side to get the thing to operate. If you've got money to burn for a great sounding speaker for your single device, you'll enjoy the sound.

That was my original review. After Bose responded below, I tried again and got the download working using IE instead of Chrome, and then using AirPlay to access multiple music libraries. The key is AirPlay - I don't know if there is an Android equivalent. Phone support from Bose is fantastic - don't hesitate to call if you get stuck.

Hi Tim.

We'd like you to know that our application can support multiple Pandora accounts and iTunes libraries under the same SoundTouch user's account.

To add a music library simply navigate to "Settings", "Music Library", and then "Add Library" within the SoundTouch app on the computer with the desired music stored on it. You can then label the library and it'll appear within the app on any device running on the network.

Additionally, another solution would be to utilize the Airplay feature of your compatible Apple device. Simply select your SoundTouch system from the Airplay menu on the mobile device to send music directly to the speaker.

If you need any assistance with your system, we have a team of wireless experts ready to help. They can be reached at 1-800-905-2156.

We hope this helps. Thanks!
