Book Description

August 1996 8 and up3 and upChildren in Crisis
A moving look at the war-ravaged people of the Balkans, caught in the bitter ethnic crossfire among Serbs, Croats, and Bosnians.

Here is a unique opportunity to experience world events through the eyes of internationally acclaimed photographer John Isaac. The stirring images of the Children In Crisis series connect you to the struggles and triumphs of children and families from the world's most troubled regions. As they take you in close, these books offer a special perspective on today's most important news headlines: they bring you the personal and emotional side of each story. Accompanying Mr. Isaac's vivid photographs are his first-person narratives. Each provides an eye-witness account of people caught in dramas and events that made history.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-A slim introduction to the travails of Bosnian children who have suffered as a result of civil war. The text is interspersed with firsthand accounts highlighted in yellow boxes. Unfortunately, the historical background is not always as clear as the first-person narratives. The excellent, full-color photographs are powerful without being overly graphic. There are scenes of destruction, a portrait of a child in a hospital, and images of cemeteries, but there are also pictures of children playing. Difficult terms, such as "concentration camp," "pro-Nazi forces," and "Sunni branch of Islam" are not explained. While this book can help younger readers form meaningful images to go with news headlines, older students may find Sherry Ricchiardi's Bosnia (Millbrook, 1996) more informative.
