Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up-In order to explain the war in Bosnia and its current struggle to survive, Black presents a clear, detailed history of the country and its neighbors from the time when clans of South Slavs settled in the Balkans and developed into individual ethnic groups through the breakup of Yugoslavia, a federation forged by Tito after World War II. This approach is useful in helping readers understand the dispersion of ethnic groups in the region and the historical grudges that were used by leaders of each ethnic group to fan the flames of suspicion against others in the 1990s. The author's account of the armed conflict among Serbs, Croats, and Muslims is measured and carefully presented as is his assessment of the future of the region. Insets on important people, events, and the role of the media as well as photographs, maps, and a chronology will all be of assistance to readers. James Reger's The Rebuilding of Bosnia (Lucent, 1997) offers many more quotes from participants in the conflict and is written with a stronger sense of drama. Black's work, however, offers more historical detail.

Review

A book that attempts to explain the history of the Balkans in a way that is clear, concise, fair, and thorough is taking on a huge burden. This title succeeds and then some, for it is also interestingly written and engaging. Step by heartbreaking step, journalist/author Black untangles the complicated series of historical events that led to the war in Bosnia, which have equal relevance to today's conflict in Kosovo.

...thoughtful touches include positioning the glossary and pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book, placing maps where they may easily be referred to... There are also ample illustrations to add immediacy and the human element to the text. A pair of well-qualified consultants give the book the stamp of authority required for such a volatile subject, and the author appears to have maintained scrupulous fairness in giving all sides. An exemplary approach to series nonfiction... -- Booklist, Starred Review, August 1999

5.0 out of 5 stars For children, still a good book, June 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bosnia: Fractured Region (World in Conflict) (Hardcover)
I can not quite say this is a 5 star or 4 star book, when it has a reading level for 9-12 year olds as purported in the description. It is still a good overview of the wars in Yugoslavia and is evenhanded. One can grasp many facts about the situation with this book that can be read quickly. Likewise this pertains some to Jeffrey B. Symynkywicz's Civil War in Yugoslavia.
