5.0 out of 5 stars "The King of B-Westerns & Serials...VCI Entertainment ~ Boss of Bullion City (1940)", January 2, 2006
This review is from: Boss of Bullion City [VHS] (VHS Tape)
VCI Entertainment and Universal Pictures present "Boss of Bullion City" (1940) (digitally remastered), long running Johnny Mack Brown series turned out in the early '40s...the story line is excellent with outstanding productions as Johnny Mack Brown becomes editor of the local town Bullion City that is overrun with gold shipment holdups and outlaws...our sheriff Harry Woods is not what he seems, could it be he is behind all the lawless shenanigans...can we trap the real robbers and catch the leader of this organized gang...will Earle Hodgins and his daughter Maria Montez be safe on the stage with a large amount of cash $15,000...there is a great scene between Earle Hodgins and the townspeople as he explains what his profession is and introduces his lovely daughter...can Nell O'Day and Fuzzy Knight stop the robbers or will Johnny Mack Brown save the day by stopping the runaway stage with Hodgins and Montez aboard and at the same time unmask the "Boss of Bullion City"...there's plenty of action in the oateater, so don't miss any of this adventure.

Under director Ray Taylor, producer Harry Sherman, associate producer Will Cowan, screenplay by Victor McLeod and Arthur St. Claire (short story/author), original film score by Hans J. Salter...the cast include a very young Johnny Mack Brown (Tom Bryant), Fuzzy Knight (Burt), Nell O'Day (Martha Hadley), Maria Montez (Linda Calhoun), Harry Woods (Sheriff Jeff Salters), Melvin Lang (Deputy Fred Wallace), Richard Alexander (Steve Hogan), Earle Hodgins (Mike Calhoun), Karl Hackett (Deputy Tug), George Humbert (Mario), Frank Ellis (Express agent), Bob Kortman (Henchman), Kermit Maynard (Card player)........special footnote, Fuzzy Knight was the sidekick with his comical ways in many B-Westerns in the '30s & '40s with Johnny Mack Brown and Tex Ritter, finally landing a co-starring role with Buster Crabbe on the small tube in the TV series "Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion" (1955) as Private Fuzzy Knight........another special footnote is actor Harry Woods, one of Hollywood's all-time meanest villains started out with "Don Quickshot and the Rio Grand" (1923), "Adventures of Rex & Rinty" (1935-Serial/VCI), "Singing Outlaw" (1937/VCI), "Come On Rangers" (1938/VCI), "Dawn on the Great Divide" (1942/VCI), "Days of Jesse James" (1939/VCI), "Panamint's Bad Man" (1938/VCI), "The Range Defenders" (1937/VCI), "Rustlers of Red Dog" (1935-Serial/VCI), "Sheriff of Tombstone" (1941/VCI), "Texas Gunfighter" (1932/VCI), "West of the Law" (1942/VCI), "When A Man's A Man" (1935/VCI), "Winners of the West" (1940/VCI, with 236 films under his belt and various television appearances........meanwhile this is an exciting Johnny Mack Brown western provided by Universal Pictures during their heyday of the early '30s.

Maria stars as Linda Calhoun, a virtuous young lady who lives according to her religious beliefs and loves, in silence, the hero of this story Tom Bryant.

This role was very important for her future, because it was the first one as a co-star; on the other hand, it is the only one of her movies in which she says some phrases in Spanish.
