2.0 out of 5 stars Movie Proposal
I thought I was going to be reading a novel, but this is basically a movie proposal. It seems like the whole book is based on Vanessa learning how to make a movie and Tracy teaching her. There were long sections about how to get extras and who would be the director, etc. I don't care. I wanted to read about the people, not the movie business. Then came the sections...

2.0 out of 5 stars Movie Proposal, July 4, 2005
This review is from: Boss Lady: A Novel (Hardcover)
I thought I was going to be reading a novel, but this is basically a movie proposal. It seems like the whole book is based on Vanessa learning how to make a movie and Tracy teaching her. There were long sections about how to get extras and who would be the director, etc. I don't care. I wanted to read about the people, not the movie business. Then came the sections about the Flyy Girl apparel and how to market that. I also didn't appreciate the part about Maya Angelou's poetry in "Poetic Justice" not working. Incorrect! It complimented the movie and it definitely worked. But the poetry in this book DID not. Then there were all these plugs on Flyy Girl. I felt like I was reading a long flyer/business proposal and I already know how to write BOTH. To top it all off, I'm already annoyed when writers write about writers, but this book had the audacity to not only have a writer talking about writers, but include HIMSELF in the book. There was a section when they talked about Omar Tyree's personality, him coming to interview Tracy, bunches of scenes complimenting how great the book was, and plugs on him winning an award. If I wanted to read about him, I'd get on his website. I really like Omar Tyree's writing, but I don't know what's going on with him lately. His books as the Urban Griot do too much overexplaining and it's carrying over into this book as well. One of my girls told me about the book because she knew how much I liked this author and her comment was "How many Flyy Girl books can you do?" I tried to give it a chance and I'm agreeing with her. He needed to let this one die with the sequel. After page 128, I was bored and put it up for sale. If he wasn't feeling himself so hard, I might have finished but I can only listen to someone compliment themselves on how great they are for so long. Jason and Shamor were pretty interesting, but their characters were sprinkled out too much for me to really get into them enough to ignore all the pat-on-the-back-Omar(Tracy)-Tyree-is-great plugs.

Note: I actually tried to give this book a second chance and read to page 244. I was completely aggravated when the author chose a character to describe to another character how everyone's personalities were. Seriously, Tyree, you have GOT to let your readers participate somehow in this book. You can't force us into loving the clothing line, the movie, Tracey, and make us believe every single belief you have about each character too. I also find it rather odd that Vanessa is hating SO HARD on Jason...that's on some incest right there.

1.0 out of 5 stars Omar Tyree Hits Rock Bottom!!!, July 7, 2005
This review is from: Boss Lady: A Novel (Hardcover)
This is my first time writing a review for a novel, but I felt compelled to. Has Omar Tyree hit rock bottom? There was no action in this book, nothing to keep me turning the page. Basically it was boring, and I just couldn't finish it. I had to move on to someone who has something to say!

...because I did not have to spend any money on this! I am not sure what has happened to Mr. Tyree, but this book was a MONSTER to get through! In fact, it was so bad, that I am returning it today, with more that half of the 'story' left.

Peep game...leave this one alone!!

Boy! Was I disappointed!! This book deserves a negative number! How many times does the word "Flyy Girl" have to appear on one page? I was so innundated with the word that it gave me a migraine! I also despise when authors pump themselves up by reffering to themselves in their own book! How tacky!!! I struggled to get through this book, and NO! it was NOT an easy read! I kept picking it up and putting it down again trying to will myself to finish this tragedy! This is coming from someone who can finish a "GOOD" book in 5 hours. Don't get me wrong, I liked Mr. Tyree's other books but my gosh, man, u coulda done better than this! What? were the publishers hounding you to hurry up and finish a book? Does anyone want my copy? This book was all over the place.A whole lot of plugging and marketing ploys. The only thing i got from it was reminiscing about the ol' days when I grew up in Philly and how much I really miss cheesesteaks and hoagies!!

1.0 out of 5 stars ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhNOOOOOOOOOOOO!, August 16, 2005
This review is from: Boss Lady: A Novel (Hardcover)
I had to give the book a rating. If I had my choice I would not even rate it 1 star. Don't get me wrong I like Omar Tyree's Single Mom and Flyy Girl and I will give an 3 star rating to For the Love of Money. But, Omar was just wrong for Boss Lady. You could totally see how he is setting up his readers for the next book in the Flyy Girl series. Boss Lady was boring and did little to pique my interest. I only continued to read it because I paid money for it. Had I known it was going to be this bad, I would have borrowed from a girlfriend and then I probably would not have finished it

....you can totally see how the book is going to end up in the first chapter. None of the characters were interesting. Tracy is not the same character and Vanessa is a poor, boring excuse of a character to take over Tracey's position. Her girlz, Alexandria, Maddy, Sasha, and Jasmine were equally boring.

I think the book could have least ended with Tracey being involved in a serious relationship. Omar could have introduced her male lover in greater detail and some dialogue between the two would have been nice. Omar could have also had the movie in production and the main characters selected for the movie. Like say, Alexandria in the role of a teenaged Tracey.

My final thought is if the next book is anything like Boss Lady, I will keep my money in my pocket. Oh yeah and the Coldest Winter Ever by Sistah Souljah was far far greater than Flyy Girl

1.0 out of 5 stars Mad I brought this book, July 7, 2005
This review is from: Boss Lady: A Novel (Hardcover)
I brought this book thinking that it was going to be as good as the first two but I was very very wrong. I'm sorry to say but this book boring. I had to force myself to read it. The only reason I read it was beacuse of a 6hr car ride and I had finished the other books I hade with me. I don't know what Omar was thinking with this one. He must be trying to get a movie deal, and then there is a web address[...]I think he was just trying to promote his clothing line and record label.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awfully Bad, September 27, 2005
This review is from: Boss Lady: A Novel (Hardcover)
I think it's about time somebody else was a "best-seller." Turns out that this writer has been pulling the wool over our eyes for years and actually won an award for it? This book is as bad as any I've ever read and I can't imagine how such a mediocre writer got signed to any publishing contract. Our book club will no longer be reading books by this writer.

1.0 out of 5 stars A real Snooze, July 25, 2005

Hvoc (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Boss Lady: A Novel (Hardcover)
Because I read Fly Girl and the sequel, For the love of money, I said "alright let's see what Mr. Tyree has to say in Boss Lady." Well, The answer, is a whole lot of NOTHING relevant.

If you're interested in the numerous plugs for a movie, clothing line, and much talk about himself and his awards, then read on, if you can stay awake.

The book is downright BORING! I was sure we would be treated to a story of how ALL the characters had matured, evolved, and learned to live life to the fullest (as only they can for themselves). It's just not gonna happen here. My advice, borrow it from the library or a friend. I would even be so generous as to let you have my copy, as it's just that bad. But, you have to read it for yourself and form your own opinion.

Hopefully, Mr. Tyree will give Ms. Tracy a rest because anything dead needs to be buried.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stop taking your readers for granted! (Negative 2-stars.), October 30, 2005
By
This review is from: Boss Lady: A Novel (Hardcover)
This book was so uninteresting I couldn't get through the first 25 pages. Seems like for the author's first 2 novels will forever be his best, although they were a bit mediocre, too. Seems like the his talent went downhill after he marketed himself as a "griot" and also insulted his female readers many months ago in Black Issues Book Review. It seems like Tyree tried (but is failing miserably) to become popular by insulting his female customers (like Michael Baisden and gangsta rappers). I am sorry but it's nice to know that there are so many NEGATIVE reviews on this author. It shows some readers are actually holding the author (and other African-American "pop" authors) accountable for publishing FAULTY products. Giving such sub-standard authors an undeserved 5-star rating is NOT helping the author or the poor novels they publish. Mr Tyree, maybe you should QUIT with the glitzy cartoon covers on the front and big photo of yourself on the back covers. Try to focus on your writing. Until then, I will NOT make another book purchase if your name is on the cover.

1.0 out of 5 stars So relieved I did not purchase this book, July 24, 2005
This review is from: Boss Lady: A Novel (Hardcover)
I purchase a lot of books but thankfully I got this one from the public library. It was horrid. I started to read it and thought this can't be possible. I picked it up a few days later and my first impression was accurate - garbage.
