And Again!,
This review is from: Boss Man (Audio CD)
The third in a trilogy of Billy Sherrill-produced albums by Charlie Rich that made little commercial impact, Boss Man should've been a lot bigger than it turned out to be (as with the previous albums, Set Me Free and The Fabulous Charlie Rich)! Nice N' Easy, a rerecording with a jazzy piano solo in the middle, should've been a monster hit! Instead, it got stuck at Country #37 and AC #34. Another rerecording, Big Boss Man, was also even better than last time. It's also funnier, especially when Charlie sings: 'Well I want a drink of water But you won't give me some! You got me workin boss man Working in the sun!' Have A Heart, a composition by his wife, Margaret Ann, is/was an excellent tune about a man who wants a woman to lift him out of his troubles and into better places. Hello Darlin' is great as well, and he actually does better than Conway Twitty! For some reason, however, it's on his own compositions where he shines the most. It's not often that Charlie recorded something more convicting than I Can't Even Drink It Away, where even alcohol can't make him feel better after his wife divorced (left) him. See the cover on the CD? That's the right cover for Boss Man. The one on the two-fer CD Boss Man/Very Special Love Songs was actually used on the record The Best Of Charlie Rich. Buy the compilation over this anyway, and maybe someday they'll reissue it with the right cover!
